I have been hearing allot about dog food killing dogs, can anyone tell me which is the best and cheapest?
I have 2 dogs 50 pounds and above. The older 1 has been suffering from what the vets say is seasonal allergies and I refuse to put her on steroids again,so I have been looking for a good for the dog,dog food instead of hearing about most store brands that are killing our dogs everyday.I have her on Iams sensitive right now(for 2 weeks) but I am not sure if it is the dog food or the change in the weather or the med’s she was on over a month ago that is helping her.She is not digging at her paws anymore or her face and she has allot more energy again. She has also been on Acidophiles for the past 3 months(because I heard that helps yeast infections/ear infections).I have been doing allot of research on her problems for the last several months to try to help her without med’s.Can anyone give me insight on what is the best dog food or the best solution to the problem

alot had to do with the recalled pet food as well. certain foods are cheaper or more expensive depending on where your from. these are the food brands that were recalled. they should tell you what is in them when you click on that particular brand!

this is another question that was asked and answered before that is pretty much the same as yours!

Best and cheapest don’t always go hand-in-hand. But a quality dog food is always a better buy for a number of reasons. First of all, you can buy a cheaper food, but when you consider you’re paying for cereal and other fillers, it’s not cheap. Grain and other similar products are responsible for many allergies and other problems, including gastric problems which lead to an expensive vet bill. Secondly, it lacks the nutrition of a better quality foods, so your dog needs to eat more to get the nutrition he needs and you will have to feed more to satisfy that need. Also many less expensive brands use ingredients from other countries which don’t have the same set of standards for quality ingredients. And, IAMS should be avoided at all costs – google Iams and animal cruelty and you will see why. There are many quality foods out there such as Wellness, Canidae, Taste of the Wild, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul, Diamond, etc. Believe me you may pay a little more up front, but you’ll be saving money in the long run.
Science diet is always the best, they are the ones that started medicated diets.
I would first talk to your vet first about changing her diet, most often allergies are food related.
As far as dog food killing dogs, that situation has been taken care of. It was the corn meal that if the base ingredient in many brands that was doing kidney damage. Science Diet does not use these bases.
Try Eagle Pack Holistic Select Anchovy,Sardine and Salmon Formula. It’s got loads of Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids and is great for sensitive dogs. Also, add fresh ,plain yogurt to her food instead of the acidophilus capsules, and add an egg to her food twice a week. Iams is an OK food, but it contains corn, which many dogs are sensitive to.
Buy flax seed in bulk, grind it up and top dress your dog’s food with about a teaspoon at each feeding. It’s high in fat, which is great for her skin and allergies and omega 3s, which is good for her inside and out. Stay with the acidophiles as long as she’s on antibiotics as antibiotics kill the good bacteria that aids in gut function and acidophiles will restore them. Taurine and vitamin E are great for allergies. I buy human grade at the health food store. I recommend a kibble dog food that does not have any corn or grain. US lamb is high in copper because it’s largely grain fed. Copper stores in a dog’s liver and causes all kinds of problems, allergies, seizures, etc. If you can find a New Zealand lamb and rice product you’ll elimintate that problem as NZ is grass fed. Cheers and good luck
My Lab/Dob cross had terrible skin allergies. My Vet suggested Nutro brand. He is several years older now (13) and his allergies are in complete control. No steroids used at all.
IAMS and Science Diet are also good, and all of these brands will help as far as how much poop your dog produces. Seems like the better the food the less the mess haha.
Remember dogs’ digestive system is similar to ours and the rule about garbage in, garbage out really applies.
Good Luck
