Is Innova EVO red meat dry dog food okay for puppies?
Is it suitable to feed this dog food to my four month old golden retriever puppy? I switched him from Healthwise to the EVO food since it has no grains. However I have read that the high protein and calcium content may make it suitable for adult dogs only, particularly in the case of large breeds. I would like to keep him on this food since his skin allergies have cleared up and he loves it. Also his hair is looking so much better. But if is really bad for him I will switch him to Innova EVO large breed puppy dry dog food. I just want to see what the general opinion is on this dog food since I have no experience with this.

The kibbles are very small…..
The protein in EVO red meat is to high for a golden puppy. He might not tolerate it very well.
Just stay with the puppy food for now and then switch when he is like a year old.
Good luck….
From what I’ve read, the protein is at 42%, which is not good for puppies. I’d agree with what you’ve read.. too much protein can cause some problems with your pup’s growth.
You should switch to the puppy food until your pup’s grown, then go back to what you’re feeding now. It’s good stuff for an adult! :]
Innova makes other foods that are lower in protein content. The regular Innova is supposedly suitable for all life stages, and they also make a puppy and a large breed puppy formula. Why not try one of those? My OPINION is that EVO is too much protein for a puppy, many others don’t share that opinion, but I prefer to err on the side of caution. The other Innova foods have barley and rice, which are much better to feed than corn and wheat. I don’t worry one bit about my dogs eating those grains. You can always try the other Innova products, and switch back to EVO when your dog is 18 months old or so. I prefer not to ever feed a food with that much protein, because I feel that my dogs are not active enough to warrant it…they get walks and playtime outside, but don’t work like they used to. If you hunt with your puppy, you may want to consider EVO for the hunting season, and Innova for the “off” season. Talk this over with your vet, he/she may have a different opinion, and I guarantee your vet will know more about this than I do.
YES!!! Its a lot better than feeding the puppy a crap dog food like Puppy Chow.

Most of grocery store dog food formulas, like IAMS, Pedigree, Science Diet, Purina, and etc contain “meat and bone meal” which has been known to contain dead dogs and cats that were euthanized in animal shelters. Their bodies are picked up and bought by the truck load by “rendering plants” , that also pick up road kill, dead live stock, and etc. They are shredded, and boiled. They skim off the fat on the top of the “soup” and collected it and sell it to pet food companies as “animal fat”, the rest of the animals’ remains are crushed up, dried and sold to dog and cat food companies as meat and bone meal.
You can read more about it here.

Here is an article where the owner of a rendering plant talks about it. He says that cremating the dead shelter animals would cause pollution, and that rendering them is good.
