can dogs take benedryl while taking phenobarbitol?
ok, I brought my dog to the vet for seizures. The vet prescribed him phenobarbitol. (Hope it works soon) forgot to ask her can he still continue taking the benedryl as needed for itching from allergies. Does anyone know? Is anyone’s dog on phenobarbitol and/or benedryl. I dont want to continue to give it to him for the skin allergies (its only as needed , not an everyday medicine) with the side effects of phenobarbitol. Phenobarb causes lethargy in dogs. My dog is on it (phenobarb) twice a day. Was only taking benedryl as needed. Now I dont know what to do…
Thanks scrappy..
My dog was just started on phenobarb on Wednesday evening. How long will the excessive thirst and frequent urination last…OMG it’s driving me nuts

Didn’t read much. Just call her up and ask, it’s that simple.
give it a shot. See what happens
if you can, avoid it.. but however if you cannot avoid it, it will not hurt your dog, just make it very sleepy but only give a half miligram for every pound the dog weighs, 10lb dog get 5mg 20lb dog gets 10mg, and so on, but avoid if possible
The best person to answer this question is, quite honestly, your Vet. You can phone the surgery – most Vets are willing to answer a simple question.
In some cases certain drugs have adverse reactions when taken with other drugs so to be on the safe side I would suggest that you phone your Vet before even contemplating giving the Benedryl together with the Phenobarbitol.
Call your vet and ask. When my dog was taking phenobarb I always called the vet before giving him anything as you just never know. It sounds like you have just started him on the phenobarb and I can tell you that it is a very good medication for controlling the seizures. The lethargic feeling that your dog has will go away as his body gets adjusted to the phenobarb. Good luck!
You should be asking this question of your vet.
