What’s going on with my Pom?
I have a 17month old pom and I have to say he is the best dog, we’re working on house training still because when I got him he would have accidents in the house if not watched carefully! Well now that we’ve moved on from that he has this itching issue, we’ve checked him for fleas and he doesn’t have any that we can see or tell! Is there something like a skin allergy that Pomeranians have that I’m unaware of or what? Please if anyone could shed some light, my poor guy itches too much and I want to give him some relief, we brush him regularly and bath him with Flea & Tick shampoo… Any Ideas?

Some Pomeranians can suffer from a variety of allergies, ranging from contact allergies to food allergies.

give him some dog powder after bath.
Maybe his skin is dry. Use moisturizing shampoo when he doesn’t have fleas. Also you could try giving him some extra virgin coconut oil with his food once a day. Try 1 tsp, if that doesnt help try 2. I give extra virgin coconut oil to my dogs, so don’t worry it is safe. You could also try giving him some organic apple cider vinegar. I have heard that it is great for dogs with hot spots. Hot spots are itchy spots on dogs and they will itch it until there is no fur there. So I’m sure it would work great for all over itching too. Just do a little research on apple cider vinegar and extra virgin coconut oil for dogs and you will find all kinds of helpful info and tips on how to give it to them.
First stop drying out his skin with harsh flea shampoo & only use a hypo or aloe pet shampoo instead. Flea shampoos are drying & can be harsh on the coat. Any dog can develop allergies either environmental or food. Sometimes it is simply the time of the year & it is pollen season now. Taking him to vet & let them diagnose the issue – could be medical problem. But changing food to better quality(like grain-free) & adding fish oil capsules to food would be the first things I would do.
Lots of questions come to mind, and a few comments , based on what you have said. I have raised 3 poms. They are great little lap dogs, but are very hyper. They need lots of grooming and brushing. They tend to have a dry skin problem, so oatmeal based, and lanolin based shampoos work well. Dry skin causes itching. Excessive bathing (more than 2 times a month) can dry the dog’s skin even more. Fleas are a big problem for fuzzy dogs like Poms. Even though you say you didn’t “see” any, trust me, he’s probably infested. Flea soaps and shampoos, or even flea collars( collars sometimes cause allergic reactions) will not keep the fleas down. Every time the dog goes out, it will pick up fleas that live in your grass in the yard. A good flea preventative like you get at the vet is about the only sure way to keep fleas & ticks down. Frontline, or Advantage
are the best kinds to get from the vet. You’ll need to keep him wormed, and treated for heartworms. If he’s not already been, neutering him can help cut down on his itching because it reduces the hormone levels in his body.
