My dog is 5 yrs. old. She has developed red skin and she scratches constantly. Have tried everything. Thanks?
My 5 year old dog, a female shitz shu, started scratching and her skin turned red and felt hot the touch. We took her to several vets, all of who felt it was an allergy, but no one could figure out what she was allergic to. We changed bedding, food, shampooed carpets. We gave her tablets to prevent fleas, although I have never seen one on her. We also changed the shampoo to a pet shampoo with oatmeal and alovera in it. We give her,on our vets advice, 12.5 mg every 4 hrs, of Benadry. The vet has given her several steriod shots which had no effect at all. We do not have the money to keep taking her to the vet. She’s a beautiful little dog who has been a great companion to my husband who is recovering from a stroke.Does anyone have any idea what may be going on. Thank you, and our dog thanks you.

Have you checked your laundry soap? Everything gets washed in it; bedding, sheets, blankets, towels, etc.
is your dogs skin problem causing her a lot of discomfort? and is it red all the time or do you think its because of her itching it..
my dog chews at her legs and they become very red and she nearly chews the hair completely off. we have come to believe she has dry skin.. there isnt really anything we could do about it.. we just tell her to stop if we catch her chewing.
the only tip i can really think of is making sure she is completely dry after baths, if her skin is still damp it could cause itchy dryness..
It can be fleas the vet can give you something for this.
It is called “Hot Spots”
You can also buy a spray for it for about $4.00 at Family dollar
This is going to sound crazy, but it works. Dab use motor oil on the hot spots, let it sit for a few minutes then wash it off. Also add a skin supplement to the dog’s feed. Also, have the vets checked for a staff infection? Simple antibiotics can fix that. If there is a smell that is probably what it is, if not try the oil and supplements. Also, the shampoo I prefer is Melaseb. You can get it online at http://www.revivalanimal.com.
I had a similar problem with my dog. She had an allergy to an unknown substance. I to had to the vet, and she got the steroids etc. and I also gave her the benadryl. Anyways, it turns out that she had seasonal allergy. Anyways, the benadryl made it worse because as it turns out she was allergic to it as well. So an allergy can be made worse not better with benedyl because my dog was allergic to it as well. So, maybe take her off the benadryll for a few days???? worth a shot??? Good luck
