My Bichon Frise has allergies causing him to itch himself constantly. His skin has red spots, he bites himself
My dog, a Bichon Frise has pinkish red blotches on his skin. His supposedly white fur has become pinkish where he licks, and scratches himself. He is almost always performing the acts of licking, scratching and biting himself. After doing some research, it seems as though that this allergy is called “atopy.” Having this allergy prevents him from enjoying the great outdoors and having fun because he has to stop from playing and itch himself. Please help. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for all the help. We have taken our dog to multiple vets and he has done the blood test. One of the vets recommended him to take Atopica, but after taking it, he threw up severely. We are scared to give him more Atopica. Do you know if it actually works? Or is throwing up actually normal after taking Atopica. Thank you.

Did you take your dog to see a veterinarian?
Ask your vet about giving him Benedrill. I know larger dogs can take a single human dose and this really helps. But I don’t know about small breed dogs. Ask your vet what he/she recommends.
well i know my bichon is allergic to fleas maybe that could be the same problem try some flea drops like front line
My cat suffers something similar! Anything can set it off and can get very bad in the warm weather. I make sure he is always free of fleas with an electric comb everyday, and bathe the sores with some antiseptic. This sounds pretty disgusting but I also make sure I remove any lose scabs from his fur as this can make the itching worse!
I’ve never seen a bichon that didn’t have this problem to some extent. My grandmother almost went bankrupt paying for the vet bills having to do with infections related to her bichon’s allergies.
After watching that dog suffer in misery for years, I would just put it to sleep.

Your vet might be able to recommend something. He can give your dog a cortisone shot to help with the itching.
A vet can give you prescriptions for meds to both deal with the allergy and some “doggy downers” in case it is stress related. Try one then the other. (On the dog that is, no sampling yourself.)
Take your dog to see the vet. He or she can do a blood test to try to determine exactly what is causing your dog to have such itchy skin. It could be an allergy, fleas or some other type of bug bite, a skin disease, or even a kidney problem.
I have to give my Chi benadryl during the spring and summer months due to itching he is allergic to certain grasses in the yard. With him he weighs around 7 lbs and the vet recommended 1/8 of a teaspoon. It may make your little dog drowsy at first but its worth it. The vet also recommended oatmeal shampoos for my little dog. But please talk to your vet before giving him any benadryl. I dont want any harm to your little guy.
Here’s a website for Household Meds that you can safely give to dogs or cats, including Benadryl. I would recommend that you have a vet look at it. It could be hot spots which are caused by a fungus. In the mean time, try the Benadryl.
Take your dog to the VET. Tell the vet what is going on and let the vet prescribe some medications and shampoos for your baby so that he can go outside and enjoy the outdoors. Believe me you will be glad you did.
