Could cat food be killing my dogs? Thought it was poison mushrooms in the yard. I’ve lost 3 now in 2 years.
I lost a 5 year old that was hardly sick a day in her life after a rain and the mushrooms came up. Then the puppy we got to replace her suddenly within a few hours got sick and died just like the first one. We moved and go 2 more puppies…i just lost one of them 2 days ago and now the other one looks like he might be getting sick. It just rained here again and the mushrooms came up. But they have all eaten cat food too. I was told by a lady one time that cat food can kill a dog because of the ash content in it the dogs digestive system can’t handle that. But the vet said it might make them have diahrra (not sure if i spelled that right, lol) but it wouldn’t kill them. But something is killing them and I can’t figure out what’s going on. Please somebody help me before I lose another puppy. Been giving him penicillin today. Was giving them Benedril for some kind of skin allergy they seems to have. Help me save my puppy please somebody. Thank you..
As I mentioned their deaths occurred after we had a rainy spell and (it was too dry before the rain for anything to grow) the mushrooms shot up. I try to get rid of them by digging them up because I had kicked them and smashed them up right before the first one died and the same thing right before the next one died. I have been digging them up thinking the kicking them over and smashing them only made it easier for them to eat. So I’m heading to the pet ER asap. Thank you for you responses. I was thinking it was the mushrooms but had my doubts about the catfood. They all ate their dogfood but you know how dogs are they want their cake and the cats too. So my cats were eating dogfood and vica versa so started feeding cats up high so the dogs couldn’t reach them. My dogs have all been wormed and vaccinated too and are very well taken care of that’s why it was so shocking that they died so suddenly. Too many identical incidents about the rain and the mushrooms for it not to be that. Thanx

I don’t thind cat food killed your dog. The dogs can eat cat food, is the cat who can’t eat dog food because of the fat that’s in the food. Nothing happens to the dog if eat cat food. You should find another reason. You should also give them a very small dose of ivomec and piranthel. Piranthel is a parasite treatment and ivomec is used for cows and horses but it is also used for dogs and cats and it kills ticks, fleas and many bacterias in the dog’s organism. With the ivomec you should let someone who knows about it do it, because it depends on the animal’s weight.
Many pet owners do not realize that some of the mushrooms that grow in their yard are toxic to dogs. Symptoms of mushroom poisoning can range from mild vomiting and diarrhea to severe digestive problems to complete liver failure.
Dogs who like to “graze” will sometimes eat wild mushrooms along with lawn grasses, leading to mushroom poisoning. Dogs can sometimes become ill by just licking a poisonous mushroom. Also, some dogs, like some people, are allergic to even edible, normally safe mushrooms.

You actually see the dog starting to eat them….
Remove any pieces from the dog’s mouth, and….
Induce vomiting with either -
Syrup of ipecac (1 teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight), or…
Hydrogen Peroxide 3% – 1 tablespoon every 10 minutes, repeat 3 times.
Call your veterinarian.
If your dog has eaten poisonous mushrooms, but there is short delay in realizing what has happened…
Save the specimens for identification.
Call your veterinarian or take your dog to a nearby emergency veterinary hospital immediately.

Protect Your Pets…
Always watch for mushrooms in areas where you walk your dogs or where they run and play. Be especially cautious of parasol-shaped mushrooms and all small brown mushrooms. Check your yard each morning, especially in damp weather, for new growth before letting your dog outside. Remember that new mushrooms can appear overnight. Whenever you find mushrooms in your yard, dig them up. Smashing or kicking them spreads the spores and even more will grow.
It can be very difficult to tell the difference between poisonous and edible mushrooms, and even harder to describe them over the telephone.

If they are vomiting and have diarrhea, it may be parvo virus. I had a puppy who died from that and it was awful! It is HIGHLY contagious, and if one of your puppies had it you need to clean EVERYTHING. Make sure to get your dogs vaccinated against it 4 times when they are puppies (up to 1 year) then a yearly booster each year after. I do know that cat food is bad for dogs, just like chocolate, but I don’t think it would have that much of an immediate effect. The mushrooms probably arnt good for them either. Keep the dogs away from the cat food, mushrooms, & get their shots!
I doubt if it’s the cat food and it would be too coincidental for them all to have died of mushroom poisoning. However, you are definetly doing something wrong ’cause dogs don’t die that easily unless they are poisoned, mistreated, neglected or all of the above. My suggestion is for you to go to the library and pick up a book on how to care for your dog or puppy. And be sure to read it and follow the instructions!
You need to have your dogs tested for allergies. If 1 more dies, pay for the autopsy. It’s cheaper & much more humane than getting new puppies every few weeks just to watch them suffer & die.
If your dog eats nothing but cat food it can make them sick. Cat food has too much protein in it for dogs, and over a long period of time it can cause renal failure. Cat’s can not live on dog food, it does not have enough protein, and will cause blindness, and other health problems. Puppies that get sick and die suddenly usually have caught a virus, maybe parvo. And also a heavy burden of intestinal worms can cause death. Mushrooms cause liver failure. The dog’s skin, and the whites of their eyes will turn yellow or orange, they will stop eating, and even with treatment some will still die, & most all survivors will have to have a special diet & medication for liver problems their entire life.
I recently picked up my 2 new Yorkie pups. We live on the lake and keep cat food on top of the houseboat for the ducks that come by. My breeder said not to let the Yorkies eat it coz it could kill them.
These are my 4th set of Yorkies and I had never heard of that before. My big guys eat what hits the boat while throwing the cat food to the ducks.
I assured her I would watch the Yorkies carefully. That’s all the info I have.
