Q&A: Are there any home remedies for treating a dog with flea allergy dermatitis?
Question by L.Randy<3’s her Pony!: Are there any home remedies for treating a dog with flea allergy dermatitis?
every spring/summer my chihuahua gets FAD(flea allergy dermatitis) and usually some advantage or frontline plus does the trick, and kills all the fleas on him. so i never have an issue with FAD. but this year the fleas have started early and i wasn’t able to get the flea preventative on him in time. so now hes getting bad rashes and hot spots because of it. So are there any home remedies for clearing it up faster. i have since started him back on the preventative but its going to take time for the FAD to heal up and he is still steady licking and chewing on his hind. anything would help. i’ve heard benadryl or cortisone cream but havn’t got any firm advise.
well usually for him, as long as hes getting the flea preventative it eventually goes away but the healing process seems to take forever. it only on his lower back rite above the tail. and he licks his armpits a lot too, but his pits arnt any where near as bad as his back….

Sadly, no. My dog had the same thing and got very sick. We paid 500.00 for meds because we waited too long and infection got into her ears. It only gets worse.

Hi… my dog used to get “hot spots” too — my vet suggested benadryl. I used the cream and the pills; however, i would always consult my vet before i gave my dog any over the counter medication.
I sure hope your dog’s itches clear up quickly
If it’s an allergy then it’s just like with people and there is no home remedy. An allergy is basically the immune system going into overdrived and fighting whatever it is you are allergic to. My pomeranian has this problem so we have to keep her on frontline and we give her a pill that prevents heartworms but also sterilizes the female flea so if she gets a few fleas they can not breed before the frontline kills them.
You may want to try apple cider vinegar diluted on dog. Here is a good site with info. I use it on my dogs for mainly mosquitoes bites.

I work at an animal hospital and we suggest to owners that they give their dog benadryl or the generic Diphenhydramine. It’s a milligram per 25 lbs. and he can have it up to 3 times a day. Its stops the itching. Also, there is a new monthly pill for fleas called Confortis. Dogs with flea allergies have had wonderful results with this. Call your vet for more information.
