Dog allergies and Hair loss?
Question by Chrissy: Dog allergies and Hair loss?
My Pekingese/Japanese Chin(10 years old) is losing hair on his chest and neck area. He is seeing the vet. They gave him an Allergy short and antibiotics. They did Blood work,X-rays, and a UTI test(to make sure he didn’t have cancer). They told me to keep combing him and make sure to use a fine tooth comb to remove dead hair. But hes just looking worse. He has less fur due to me combing him. His Right side Chest area has a large bald spot that travels around to his right shoulder & neck and you can clearly see his skin, when you push the fur away.It isn’t bloody or pink/raw. It looks like i shaved him in a few spots. He had one similar near his back leg, but now it looks fine, the hair has grown back and it looks perfectly fine.Should i just keep doing what they are saying or go to another vet for a second option..
Does anyone else have this problem? or has had this problem and found a Solution?
Side Note:Hes on flea meds, allergly meds and antibiotics

Your vets are probably trying the best they can, however, sometimes problems aren’t that easy to detect. If you really feel that they could do better, then maybe you could try seeing another vet for a second opinion. Try asking for a new diet- if this is due to allergies a new diet could help. I recommend science diet Z/D. Keep doing what your vets tell you, and hopefully your dog will get better in time.

I’m no vet by any means, but it sounds like cushing’s disease. It’s a condition where the dog’s adrenal glands produce too much cortisone hormone and so as a result it decreases hair growth and makes the skin thinner. I’d keep a close eye on your dog as this disease often makes the dog’s joints and limbs very weak and will often make the dog act a lot older than it really is. I would definitely seek a second opinion if the first vet didn’t even consider this problem at all. I see this condition a lot as a groomer and the dogs come in looking awful usually because the dog has degenerated so badly. To my knowledge, there’s not really a cure for it. All my clients do really is shave the rest of the dog so the patches don’t look so obvious. Good luck! I love Chins & Pekes!
