My dog is acting very odd…?
Question by Kimi: My dog is acting very odd…?
My dog has issues…she is a shitzu, she has always been house broken, she is 11 years old, allergy to beef protein, has terrible skin allerigies. I’ve taken her to the vet…no kidney problems or bladder issues, he can’t pin point why she is behaving badly…schedules haven’t changed. She turns circles in corners of rooms then will just walk away, she has also started urinating repeatedly on our carpet in several areas (we’ve had these areas professionally treated, several times), she does this when we are home right in front of us and when we are not home (can’t crate her, she tries to dig herself out, ending with very bloddy paws). We’ve tried axiety meds…everything. If we try to pick her up she bites us…actually will bring blood (we have to pick her up with a towel) and on top of all this (actually too many issues to list) she stinks! We give her a bath and within an hour…she stinks…horribly! Even our guest will comment on her smell! Anyone have any idea what could be up with her?

The dog might just be under a lot of stress, or she could be nervous and scared. Try to be gentle with her, and don’t make quick movements toward her.

she may have a bacteria infection on her skin, she needs a vet appt
If she is 11, its probably wat I call “old-timers disease”. Shes probably acting weird because of it. seniors always start acting a little weird once they become around 70 years old. Don’t worry. Just build more trust with her and maybe re-potty train her. Good luck!
it sounds like she is bored which is making her stressed out. you should take her to an off leash park and let her run around, socialize with the other dogs and play to hearts content until she is drained and ready to go to eat something and sleep. her smell may have something to do with her anal glands but stress can also cause skin issues and smell. try a diluted tea tree oil bath or diluted neem oil treatment. both work as antiseptics and will kill any bacteria. on humans neem oil is a cure all for dandruff, psoriasis, rashes and bacterial infections etc. in a diluted tincture it will work wonders for her coat and skin. tea tree oil does the same but not as potent. both are also known for killing mites, fleas, ticks etc.
btw just your presence in the house is not enough, doggies need lots of love, affection and attention. my little guy will pee on the floor right beside me if i’ve ignored him for too long (a few hours) just to get my attention focused on him. the key is to not punish them for their actions, quietly clean it up and a few minutes later. play with her and give her some love.
it sounds more like a behavior issue causing medical issues, not the other way around.
you have a lap dog, do some research on her breed and how they like to be treated.
sorry, im just going to ad because i hadnt noticed you had mention her age. 11 years old, is super old for a small doggie. her stinkyness probably has something to do with it and her temperment as well. but try the washes they should improve her skin problems and smell regardless of age.
Getting senile..
