My Vet Says That My Dog Has Food Allergies But The Special Food Doesn’t Seem To Help What Can I Do That Will?

We have been giving him only the natural duck and potatoe that the vet said to use and the shampoo, but he still chews his feet raw and scratches all the time. Has anyone else had this problem and if so what did you do to help your dog? He’s to young to leave on prednisone.

All I can give you is what my vet has told me, blood work for the full list of what your pet is having allergies to..you have to ask the cost of the test, vet told me $300.00..and if you are like me you don’t have that kind of money sitting around, you can try giving your dog a ‘Dog Antihistamine” called Hydroxyzine Pamoate and there is one other pill I give when my dog gets that dry itchy skin its called Temaril-P. Based on the weight of your dog will tell the price, If you have been going to your vet for a long time ask them to cut the cost and offer less costly pills and see if they can cut the cost on the blood work test, if the vet office is there to really help you then they will work on the money issues to cut cost and still give good doggy healthcare…Good Luck
I had a friend with a dog that the vet had on one of these supposed allergy controlling diets but it could hardly walk.
I gave her some food (raw meaty bone diet I made for my dogs) in two weeks that dog was running around to the surprise of the owner.
She did then learn to make the food herself for her dog and it was much healthier.
Some other dog that have been on cortisone and and other drugs to block the symptoms for years came off it once they got off that kibble stuff, well within some in 2 weeks some a month!!! so it was the food, cooked, preservatives and carbs that were making those dogs sick, so I suspect this is what might be wrong with your dog.

can also help the dog be better, but I think the food it your first move.
How long has it been? Sometimes it takes at least several months for it to clear up.
Also, there are several limited ingredient diets out there. Duck & Potato is a good one, but there are Lamb diets, Venison Diets, even fish and vegetarian based diets that may work. http://naturalbalanceinc.com/dogformulas… has a few listed.
I also know dogs that have had amazing success with raw or semi-raw diets. http://www.naturesvariety.com/product_ch… lists some of the product that I use when dealing with tricky dogs.
You can also get the dog allergy tested. It will be pricey, but may be better for the dog in the long run.
GL with puppy!
Sometimes it takes a lot of trial and error to find the right food for your allergic dog. I would suggest Evo, Merrick, or California Naturals as some other options. There are a few other Natural Balance foods for allergic dogs as well. Make sure he’s not getting any treats or anything with grain in it.
Try a grain free food or a raw diet. These have better ingredients, and a raw diet is very easy to control what your dog eats. For dry or canned food, check out http://www.dogfoodanalysys.com pick a 5 or 6 star food. Avoid foods that have ingredients that you know your dog is allergic to.

It takes awhile when you’re eliminating foods for the dogs system to “calm down”, usually 6 – 8 weeks. You didn’t say how long you’ve been feeding the duck/potato. You should ask your vet about giving your dog an antihistamine (benadryl) to help with the itching.
It takes a good 8 weeks for the food trial to work- you have to keep at it and just feed them that ONLY- not treats or anything else. That is how they know what it is. I would just listen to them and try this first and then see about an allergy test if it doesnt help. But you have to give it time enough. I know it is frustrating!
How long has he been on this new food? It takes a good six weeks before the food gets into the dogs system and then you’ll know whether its working or not.
