I saw several questions today about dog parks and some of the answers got me to thinking…
Do people bring food in your dog park?
What about dog treats?
Kidsicles? (take a guess what that is…)
What do you do/and or think about that?
I have food allergy dog. She’s not allow to have any treats. It throughs her into an itching, licking mess….

I quit going to dog parks after this incident:http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;…
)
when coupled with another incident starring a know-it-all owner of one of my breeds telling me my near champion (11 pts and 1 major) b*tch is a poor speciman of her breed because she isn’t tall weedy and dripping in coat like his spayed b*tch and after said spayed b*tch BIT my b*tch causing her to decide sitting next to me was a better option- leading to Mr. Know-it-all to assert my b*tch (Service Dog extraordinaire) has tempertament issues– I decided I’d had enough of morons.
Add on the fact my partner does NOT know how to deal with owners/dogs with poor manners rushing at him/his b*tch and I simply outlawed the notion for our house.
Dogs do NOT have to socialize with other dogs. They do not need to interact with other packs. I prefer to exercise my dogs in places and with people/dogs who I consider reliable (and not idiots).
I’m starting to think I’m becoming a crotchety old biddy (and I don’t CARE!!!).
For what its worth- I had GREAT luck with dog parks in CA and in MN– its only in western WA that I’ve decided I cannot tolerate the morons. When I did bring my dogs to dog parks I did usually have a pocket full of kibble- my dogs, raw fed, think its a great treat- other dogs always scorned the stuff!
As far as kidsicles- I borrowed a friend’s 4 year old daughter to reintroduce one of my dogs to children after a bad incident at an airport where a child kicked my dog in training (dog started shying from kids)- we smeared her lil cheeks and hands in peanut butter and my dog decided kids are still a good thing. I swear, she now sees kids and thinks “yummies”!
I think that if you personally want to bring a few treats for your own personal dog then that would be fine BUT i think that they shouldnt be allowed to share the treats without asking permission, or just putting them on the ground.
i think that kids (im assuming thats what you mean by kidsicles) should be allowed in IF and only IF they are over the age of ten. I HATE IT ABSOLUTELY HATE IT when people bring in 5 year olds, it drives me insane! I mean they cant handle it they cry, laugh, and try to mess with the dogs, even if the owner has told them not to.
Being a kid myself though i feel kind hypocritical about saying that.
ADD:
YoLO!- I cannot answer your question, it says i cant access it, do you know why?
ADD #2:
Oh ok!
My account got suspended a while ago. im the girl who made the tribute video.
Cindy dog parks are like play groups for kids to me. Everyone there has the perfect child / dog and they all know the best way to raise them and I am not into listening to bullshit, so I don’t go to neither.
The thought of taking treats would be ridiculous to me, I could not imagine that every dog there would be trained to the extent that I wouldn’t not have 10 dogs jumping at me for treats.
If I went I would have to take my kidsicles with me and I don’t know how many times I have watched people let their dogs jump and lick my kidsicles all over (my kidsicles just stand and give me the look wtf is up with this dog). My kidsicles always attract the untrained dogs from all corners of the earth.
I don’t have any dog parks near me
But if I did, I wouldn’t like if people bought food into it. My dog like yours, is sensitive to some ingredients in dog food. I never give my dogs human food and if someone thought it was nice of them to slip them something to eat, I would get pretty upset if I didn’t check it first.
It’s the same if you have children, you wouldn’t want anyone giving your kids something to eat witout asking you first…what if your child had allergies?? My dogs are my kids and I wouldn’t want to see them getting hurt by someone who thought they were doing good, but actually could be harming them.
Also, LOL @ kidsicles!! In the summer, my girls always look like kidsicles at the end of the day!!
I have an allergic dog too and I definitely don’t want anybody else feeding my dog anything. My dogs don’t get many treats anyway, so I’d rather not have it going on.
I support the concept of dog parks but in reality don’t use them. Too many problems with bad dog behavior, bad owner behavior, and now where we are, people abandoning dogs there (occasionally dogs with parvo they can’t afford to treat and are too chicken-&%# to have euthanized).
So we do play dates. Call me an over-protective mom – I don’t care.
Can I get in on the BDG? I’m a margarita gal myself. Rockin – I am worried about you!
I think introducing food (which is a resource for most dogs) at a dog park is asking for a dog fight. At the very least it leads to dogs begging off the people who brought the food (human or dog food) – which is annoying especially when most dogs slobber. I don’t go often but don’t use food at an enclosed dog park. I do use it at open field type parks but only when I know my dog is away from other dogs.
Consuming human food at a dog park is just stupid – people need to be supervising the dogs, not eating lunch.
I have only had people bring trainer treats to the park, and I have seen an occasional kidsicle. I do not see people bring anything really crazy. I also do not go to the dog park a lot because my babies are Boxers and I have had people tell me they are a “Vicious” breed, and I know if another dog was to attack my dogs might be blamed. I stay away from there as much as possible, and we go to places where the dogs are on leads usually.
We don’t go to the dog park anymore…(too many irresponsible dog owners sitting on picnic benches not paying attention to their dogs). When we did go…we didn’t bring treats because we didn’t have a reason. I never noticed anyone handing out treats, but I’d be really upset if someone tried to give my dogs treats without permission.
I did tend to see kidsicles at the doggy parks, but they seemed pretty harmless and my dog was more interested in the other dogs than the kidsicles.
Edit: Animal Artwork…I 2nd that for doggy parks in Western Washington!!!
Some people bring treats, but they are generally training a recall. Everyone that I’ve run into with treats will ask me before giving Kip a treat. however, some of the things I’ve read here about dog parks makes me think we have a *great* dog park, or at least informed people who use the park.
Kidsicles? With all the alcohol you’ve been consuming in the last few days, I’d be afraid to even guess
Yes I’ve made the mistake of bringing food into the dog park..I got mauled. Literally.
People STUPIDLY bring treats to a dog park. That’s a BAD idea for many reasons:
-Will cause scuffles among dogs
-Some people don’t want their dog having treats
I got in an argument with someone for bringing HUGE bags of crappy colored biscuits, and feeding them to ALL the dogs in the park WITHOUT OWNER PERMISSION.
Needless to say, dogs fought (including his with others trying to protect ‘their’ treats) and gave my dog hives.
Gave a friend of mine’s dog hot spots. She yelled at the man MANY times and we both told him to STOP feeding OUR dogs treats.
They got in a verbal argument, long story short, this man PUNCHED my friend in the face..female in her 20′s, man in his 70′s. Cops called, yadda yadda yadda.
Sorry, I’m ranting. I HATE when people do that, but I no longer go to the dog park anyway.
NO food, NO children.
It drives me crazy when people bring food, I will ALWAYS say something. My girl has bad allergies as well, plus she is obnoxious when there’s food and I don’t like having to drag her away when she’s fixated on the person who has food.
I don’t like kids at the DOG park. They get run over, chased and lots of dogs just dont like kids!
It’s not fair that our dogs are IN DANGER because of children, it is the ONE place we have to take our dogs and let them run around. How many parks for children are there?
Leave your kids and food at home.
i keep treats in my pocket because i need them to bait one of my dogs. He listens wayyy better. I know my treats are probably 99.9% allergy free so i dont mind giving one out only if the owner doesnt care and i do make sure to ask.
Food is a bad idea i think
Save the kidsicles or doggie ice cream for home
Dog parks?
well in the town I live there is not a single dog park so we have to make do with parks and the hills near my house.
I take water for both me and him, a fruit for me and a few treats for Kye.
Add* kidsicles – :S am I missing something again Cindy?
No, I don’t think food(animal or people) should be allowed in the dog parks. My dog has to lose weight and people are always trying to give her something. I have seen too many dog fights because of it.
I bring my dog’s personal treating in my pocket but I woin’t let him eat anything else someone I don’t know gives him.
Amazing how many people don’t know what Kidsicles are!
I’m not a huge fan of the dog park, period. God knows what walking germs are around that place!
Food simply doesn’t belong to dog parks. Period.
whta the heck is KIDSICKLES
Human food is a really bad idea, because it will definitely rile up the dogs. I’m still annoyed at the woman who shrieked that my dog “bit” her because he was the fastest of the group of six dogs who wanted her corn dog. He happened to get it, and she tried to take it back. She actually put her fingers into a strange dog’s mouth. I offered to replace her lunch, apologized profusely and handed her all the cash I had on me (which was on $5 — my purse was in my trunk) and put my dog on a leash until she left. The people around me all seemed to think that I had gone way above and beyond, and that she was in the wrong. Thinking back, while it’s inexcusable that my dog stole her food, she had to have been missing a few screws to bring her lunch into the off-leash area…
What is more frightening are the parents who allow their children to eat in the dog park. Are you asking for someone’s dog to hurt your kid???
I have on rare occasions brought treats with me, and my dogs “share”, but never without explicit permission from the owners of the other dogs. I do know other owners who are less careful, though.
