What Is The Best Treatment For Flea Allergies In Dogs?

I have 2 dogs, a Shar pei and a miniature Aussie. Both have severe flea allergies and we have tried almost everything. It seems as if even one flea will make them break out, lose hair and scratch uncontrollably. Any suggestions?

There is a prescription spray called Knockout for use only in dogs- cannot get anywhere near cats because it can cause serious damage including death. The specialists in Florida- where we have fleas 12 months out of the year- recommend it for the dogs that are allergic to fleas. The clients that I have on it love it- works great. Along the same lines as Frontline spray- but works against different things than frontline. See the link below for more info on fleas and treating than you ever wanted to know.
Use Frontline Plus every 4 weeks.
Be sure that your home is free and clear of all fleas. One flea CAN and WILL cause reactions in flea allergy animals.
Otherwise, talk with your vet. There may be other options to prevent, but most importantly, your home must be rid of all fleas and flea eggs. Sometimes treating the home may take a second or even a third time.
You will probably need to get allergy medications or something form the vet
you can try cortizone spray… you can get it in the pet aise at wal-mart
Use CapStar (it’s a pill that will kill all fleas in 24 hours), then put on Frontline (I use Frontline Plus, but I live in Louisiana) or some other type of flea medication, and then wait two days and bathe in a shampoo that says it’s okay to use with flea medication. If you use a shampoo that does not say that, it will take off the flea medication. Also, you have to wait two days before or after you put on the flea medication or you run the risk of chemical burn.
Advantage is good for dogs with sensitive skin and kills fleas and ticks. Frontline Plus kills fleas and all kinds of ticks (again…not too sure of Frontline). Advantix kills fleas, ticks, and mosquitos.
