What Is Going On With My Dog? Allergies?
My dog is a female year and a half chocolate lab/springer spaniel mix. She has been eating purina just like our other dog, both with no problems. About 5 weeks ago, she started rolling on her back in the poop around the yard. We just thought it was a bad habit from leaving her outside too long. Maybe it is. We had to bathe her 3 seperate times, mostly just around the neck. We used a gentel, natural shampoo on the area. We have been vigilant about cleaning up after the dogs and that habit has seemed to stop. Good.
Perhaps unrelated, 3 weeks ago she started scratching like crazy. And scratching. And scratching. And chewing on her feet. We didn’t see any signs of fleas, mites, bugs; no red marks, no flakiness. No signs other than itching. Her energy was also down, but she has been staying awake at night to scratch when she normally sleeps.
A week ago we started feeding her plain rice and ground lamb in the hopes it was perhaps a food allergy. It seemed to help after a few days, but now today I see in between her toes is a little red (caught her licking.)
Could this be pollen allergies? Does this sound like a food allergy? I will take her to the vet in another week when I get paid, but am concerned about now that she is red between the toes.
She has a fenced in yard in a city with grass, trees and flowers; we live in Northern MN.

Usually you will see redness and irritation from food allergies around the lips, face and sometimes neck.
Even shampoos that seem “ok” can be really drying. Try dampening a wash rag and moisten her coat, then apply some unscented lotion like Keri or Vaseline Intensive Care, this should help her if her skin is dry. Also you can put some olive or corn oil in her food, about a tablespoon once per day…flax seed oil (available at drug stores) can also be put in the food (in place of corn or olive oil) and works great. Remember, one or two flea bites can cause itching for a week or more. Try to keep a high quality flea preventive on her like Advantix or Frontline.
It could be from the food, it could be allergies or dry skin or bug bites…your Vet will give you a better idea. For now, although I always recommend consulting your Vet first…you can give her a 25mg capsule of Benedryl twice a day. It is very safe.
Contrary to what people believe, oatmeal shampoos are horrible for dry skin, and as a maintainence shampoo. Oatmeal shampoos are good for yeast, and even poison ivy and such because it dries things up. Use it on healthy skin, it makes it dry…use it on already dry skin and it makes it even worse. When you add water to a bowl of oatmeal what happens? It sucks up all the water, oatmeal shampoos do the same on your skin….they suck out the moisture. I will usually try a new shampoo on my own arm, if it makes my arm itch or my skin really dry…chances are it will dry my dog out too!
no it is not allergies its probably poop-syndrome get your vet to see him its a sickness where your dog has everything you said and if you don’t treat it later his poop will be purple
you know i bet you pretty in person.umm i..i bet your dog is too! hee. meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!
well my opinion it could be the lamb or the shampoo. try using an oatmeal based shampoo.
My mixed dalmation had the biting the feet thing and yes it is allergy and your dog needs an antibiotic. So that with the doc appt is about 140$ I really hated to pay for vet bills when she was alive. But i can tell you that at the coop store they have this sweet potato dog food that goes over well with dogs, its expensive about 30 for the big bag, but worth it. Potatoe dog kibble is what your looking for. Snacks can be carrots, chicken, potatoe skins (regular and sweet) Every year my dog got this allergy going on at this very time the last five years of her life. Good luck! ps rolling in poop would cause mange if not washed right away (another antibiotic and shampoo.)
Well, mostly likely it’s some kinda allergies with a bug or plant. What a coincidence! My dog has the same situation! Actually, to heal this kinda problem, try using this kind of medicine, (not that expensive) just search it in a grocery store, with variety’s of things…and search for some medicine that will cure scratching, licking, e.t.c. If you go to the vet it’s the same. No, it sounds more like food allergies if it’s not that. But the medicine should work! Good luck to you!
