My grandmother had this problem a few years ago and she is totally against chemicals…if your daughters have severe chemical allergies then I would not suggest to exterminate. What did people do before chemicals?…soap, water and cleaning all surfaces.
First wash your dog and follow up with a flea comb to get the eggs…
Then I suggest Frontline as it kills eggs/fleas within 24-48hours.
Next wash all blankets, rugs, things your dog lays on…wash it in a machine or a tub with hot water and detergent.
After you do all that, vacuum….vacuuming will suck up many of the fleas living in the carpets.Vacuum couches or anything the dog lays on.Soap wash hardwoods too(if you have them).
The last step is shampooing/steaming your carpet…you can hire someone or what my grandma did was just go to a safeway grocery store and rent a rug doctor steam/shampoo machine(like $30).Then vacuum again right after you steam/shampoo.
and repeat a few times during the week…washing the dog, using a flea comb, vacuuming everyday, washing the rugs etc at least once more, and giving the carpet a second steam/shampoo cleaning.
Also I hear that giving a dog a salt water bath works well combined with Johnsons baby shampoo(you can do that yourself)…My vets office provides a natural flea dip that’s basically a salt water type bath(so a flea dip at a vets is another option, though frontline should be enough).
I use frontline on my dogs…I really think its one of the best flea treatments out there..spray your yard with a non-toxic product that is safe for kids/pets(if thats were the dog got the fleas)
It will take a bit of time and you should repeat a few times during the month but getting better flea medication and really cleaning carpets, rugs and blankets should get those suckers out of your house.
good luck
K9 Advantix and Frontline are excellent products. Fleas can live on your dog, home, and yard for a long time. You must continue to apply the treatment every month faithfully and your yard needs to be treated as well. Your pet will not need any additional medications but the monthly treatment. If your dog, yard and house are infested then it will take a while to get rid of the problem. Ingesting flea eggs causes tape worm so you may want to collect some of your dogs feces and take it to your veterinarian.
To really get rid of fleas, you have to disrupt their life cycle. An adult flea can live for four months on the body of a dog, but it’ll die in a couple of days without its canine host. So it’s not enough to kill the adult fleas; you have to get rid of all the eggs and larvae, too. You may also try other products, check them out:http://lnk.nu/dogtime.com/s1f.html
Simple solution. Get proper meds from your vet, for the dog, and have a professional exterminator come out and spray your house and yard. Simple?
