My dog seems to be scratching and biting himself like crazy (not fleas, not worms, possibly his diet but I feed him home-cooked raw food now)
I was thinking maybe something in the air? Can I give him people allergy medicine? Is this harmful? One pill a day? The recomended dose for adults..

You shouldn’t give your dog any medicine intended for humans, you need to see the vet and get the problem diagnosed.
If it is allergies then you will be given the appropriate medication, I get antihistamines for my Labs allergies. They are relatively inexpensive, it is better to give the correct treatment and dosage for your dog, and only the vet knows what that is.
Raw food isnt the best idea these dogs are not wolves . Make sure no paracites (spelling)
Okay get the liquid stuff works faster and better. And for some reason dogs like it….
little dog 5-10=5 CC’s or ML
ANy dog larger then that go to about 10 CC
anything over that might give you a dog in a coma(not really but it will be loopy as hell) or give you the dog from hell and it will attempt to eat you. Some dogs get the reverse effect of the meds kind of funny and scary at the same time.
But thats the best idea.
Dog’s can develop allergies at any point/time in their lives. You can ONLY give your dog Benadryl Allergy – 1 .25 mg. (pink tablet) every 4-6 hours w/cheese or some sort of meat unless you want to shove it down its throat for a dog weighing between 20 – 40 lbs. I have found that one dose a day does the trick.
I am not a Vet., but this is what my Vet. suggested for me to do. I have done this from time to time, and it really helps. Also, you can give your dog a baby aspirin at the same time to relieve its discomfort.
Benadryl if a safe antihistamines. How much does your dog weigh?
Diphenhydramine* Benadryl
pill use 25 mg cap/tab (if you use 50 mg pills make sure to adjust appropriatly)
10 pounds
1/2 pill
10-20 pounds
1 pill
20 – 30 pounds
1 pill
30 – 50 pounds
1 – 2 pills
50 + pounds
2 – 3 pills
3X daily
Other over the counter dog safe antihistamines
Atarax (same dosage)
Elavil ( only one tablet for all weights 2 X daily)
there are others, but benadryl is a good one!
Edit: What food recipe do you use. If you prepare a home cooked or raw food, you have to add vitamins and the correct proportion of meats and veggies and fats. Dogs are less allergic to lamb than to beef and chicken, however, it is more expensive. If you are not feeding the right foods, it will be worse than feeding kibble. In the wild animals get about 80% of their water from their food and they only get 12-15% from kibble (dry dog food). The kidney and liver can not flush all the toxins out and they build up over years, if anybody feeds their animal an all dry food, the animal and the owners will pay in the futures. Add water of broth to your pets food. It is one of the most imprtant things I can stress. Good job at trying to make your dog a good meal. There are plenty of free recipes online. Good luck. Oh yeah, even if one fles jumps on your dog it could cause this reaction, I would deflea your home and yard. a cheap all natural …NUTRITIONAL …way would be Diatomaceous earth. Read about it!!! http://www.ontheothersideofthefence.org gives sliding fee prices if needed and free shipping.
You know what….we don’t even know the size of your dog….or what kind of allergy med you are talking about..so how could we make a judgment. I do know liquid Benedryl is ok for puppies….just a few drops….but you don’t know what you are treating….that would be the first step. To know what is wrong. You cannot possibly treat something about which you know nothing. AND you feed “home-cooked raw food??????” Is it cooked or raw?? It can’t be both. Get you info together and try again. Maybe someone can help.
it’s ok to give a child dose to a dog, my dog when she was a puppy ate a bee and swelled up fast. On a fast consult our vet said give her a benadryll, child dose. I also find it curious you prepare his food but then choose to consider over the counter human meds to treat. What is the breed of the itchy boy?
what has your vet said?
do not prescribe any meds especially human meds to your dog. you could cause serious problems. espeically if your dog already has problems you could make them worse, then you are left with a dog that’s having more trouble than when you started and a more expensive vet bill than just a simple exam would have fixed to start with.
my vet said it was okay to give my dogs benadryl.
they get itchy eyes and ears alot!
i just give them one pill, but you should probably check with your vet first! it depends on the size or your dog also! mine are medium sized dogs! and since dogs cant swallow a pill, just rap it up in some cheese, they love it!
depending on your dogs age and weight you should be able to give them children’s Benadryl. I have given it to my dogs for long rides in the car. You can try it and see if it helps the situation. I would try half of the recommended dosage.
I know that you can give one Benadryl in a 24 hr period if you dog is at least 15 lbs. If not call your vet to verify the dosage. It can raise their blood pressure slightly but should be fine if your pet is healthy.
You can give benedryl. And yes, my vet told me. Only plain benedryl, not the one with extra medication in it. I don’t remember the dosage, but it can easily be found online. Large dog, I’m thinking one pill.
My 2 year old beagle had allergies and the vet told us to go and buy some benedril. One of the small pill is fine for a medium to large size dog, half a pill for smaller ones.
benadryl!! is okay but i don’t remember the dosing call your vet for that!!do don’t give him a human dose!! it can kill him i gave my rotti this all the time it work vary well!! good luck
my vet told me that u can give ur dog a benedryl and it WILL NOT hurt them.
I’ve given then to mine for all types of allergies. still healthy and happy.
you should ask your vet to provide allergy meds, humans can be harmful to dogs
if he is pulling his hair out it is hot spots. u can buy stuff from the store to put on it. but allergy is fine.
