Is It Normal For My Rat To Itch Constantly? I Almost Think He Has Allergies Is This Possible??

I have checked him out for fleas and mites and found nothing. I give him a bath weekly with a tearless dog shampoo…is this okay?

dog shampoo may be too rough for his skin, use oatmeal human soap or something with aloe. Aloe and oatmeal are really good for sensitive skin. Aslo I always use human stuff to bath my rat because it has already been tested on rats and is usually pretty gental for them.

Maybe he’s allergic to you. Is it possible that you are dirtier than your pet rat?

It could be either allergic, skin flaking, emotionally unsecure (my hamster does that when i’m not around or when it is being bully by its brother) or feeling unwell.
What you can do is check out its enviroment for any new additional that you might put in the last few days. For example, rat and hamsters dont like pine or acone woodshaving.
If nothing seems to be the problem then a visit to the vet is a must for any irriations that can be naked to human eyes.

Call the vet and ask them.

You are bathing him to often…bathing to much makes them loose oils on their skin and when they don’t have those oils, their skin gets dry and itchy
Bathing to often is your problem, try not to bath him unless he seems dirty

My brother had a pet hamster that he used this foam shampoo on which said it was safe but the hamster chewed her skin all around her butt and there was no hair there so I think you should talk to someone at PetCo or whatever pet stores are located near you and listen to their opinion.

Yes, you rat can have allergies. Stop bathing him. He will take care of himself through grooming and the oils will come back. Bathing strips his oils.

Well, it’s a rat. Pretty impressive you bath your rat. Maybe the padding in the cage is bothering him.
