Is There Anything I Can Do To Make My Dog’s Itchiness Better?

My dog has either come down with some kind of bad skin allergy or has fleas, because he literally can’t go about 7 or 8 seconds without turning around and biting/scratching himself. I haven’t checked for fleas yet, but he’s really itchy so I doubt if it’s a skin allergen. We can’t get him in for a fleabath until at least Monday, so is there anything we can do at home to make it more comfortable for him until we can get him in?

A childs dose of Benadryl will help relieve some of his discomfort. Also, bathe him in some hydrocortisone shampoo (available at almost any store) and leave it on for 10 minutes. It could be fleas, but if it is an allergy, you need to find the cause. Most of dog allergies are food allergies. Have you changed his food recently? Good luck to you and your pup. And definitely bathe him in the hydro shampoo, it will help tremendously!
The most common skin allergy is going to be a corn allergy which is the most common ingredient in grocery brand dog foods. This allergy usually produces symptoms of dry flaky red itchy skin. Dogs will actually dig themselves raw and bleeding in no time flat. And an allergy can actually manifest itself overnight….not allergic one day to allergic the next.
YOU SHOULD PUT FRONTLINE ON HIM ONCE A MONTH, DURING THE SPRING AND SUMMER MONTHS. THAT WOULD CONTROL THE FLEAS (IF THAT’S WHAT HE HAS). ALSO, THERE IS A PRODUCT THAT PETSMART SELLS CALLED “HEALTHY COAT SHED AND ITCH RELIEF”. IT’S $10 FOR 50 CHEWABLE PILLS. IT HELPS TO ELIMINATE DRY BRITTLE HAIR, DANDRUFF AND EXCESSIVE SHEDDING, WHILE SAVING YOUR DOG FROM SCRATCHING AND ITCHING. I HOPE THAT HELPS.
If he’s itching that bad he probably has fleas. instead of a flea bath i would go with advantage. the fleas will still be in your house and in the yard so they will just reinfest the dog again. If the dog is on advantage each one that bites him will die. Depending on how bad your house and yard is infested you may have to treat those areas too.
First, check to see if it is fleas. Could be something else like mange or chiggers. Flea soap works well on chiggers, too. If you see fleas, try some mild flea powder until you can bathe the dog. He could have dry skin and a small amount of corn or olive oil on his food will help; ask your vet about giving a small amount of flax seed if it turns out to be dry, itchy skin. Also, get Aveeno Oatmeal Bath or make your own bath by putting oatmeal in your blender until it’s a fine, dust consistancy. Add to running bath water. You may need to take the dog to the vet for medication until the problem is resolved.
ya every1 else basically covered all the main points but definetly dont take him to a flea bath if he doesnt have fleas and frontline does work really well
Give him a bath in cool (but not really cold) water. Don’t use shampoo, that could dry out his skin more. Definitely check for fleas before you take him for the flea bath, if that’s not the cause it could just irritate his condition more. Don’t scratch his itches for him–it could be like a mosquito bite, where scratching just makes it worse. Try to distract him with a toy or something.
they have some kind of spray you can use on your dog thats like anti itch and gets rid of fleas. my dog had the same problem. i think u should try it.
bennadryl will help with the itching
What are you feeding your dog? If there is corn in the food, stop feeding it and try feeding your dog plain boiled chicken and rice. You can add canned, unsweetened pumpkin to this if you’d like. This is not a permanent solution, and it should not be the only thing you feed your dog – but at least this will help you to determine if the itchiness is caused by his food.
Here’s a site that will help you to find better foods for your dog:http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/
benadryl will help with the itching, call a vet and ask how much to give him. Has he switched foods recently? If so, he could be allergic to it. This happens to my pug a lot and distracting her helps a lot. I would say try an anti itch shampoo until monday, but I’m not sure how that would affect the flea bath. Anyways, good luck.
If he has fleas, he doesn’t need a flea bath, what he needs every single month is a topical liquid applied to the back of his neck to prevent flea infestion – Frontline or Advantage work best.
You can give him some Benadryl too to calm the itching. If it is still back Monday, you really need to take him to the vet before he scratches himself raw and gets sores – the vet can give him a shot of prednisone to stop the itching fast.
If he is really infested with fleas, the vet can give him a pill, Capstar, that will get the fleas off in about 20 minutes.
Put that Frontline or Advantage on every single month and there will be no fleas – works far better than a flea bath or collar.
well you can look around for fleas on him and give him a bath yourself with flea shampoo if you can find such a thing.
