We went out of town last week and left our golden retriever with a friend who has two other dogs. He has been on Frontline for two years and has had the same food for almost three. Two years ago we found out that he had flea allergies, but since then everything has been fine. Both of the dogs he was staying with are on Frontline and their owner reports no fleas anywhere. I haven’t found any here at my place either.
Here’s the problem, he came back itching a lot, but nothing too bad at first. Then one day we woke up and he had itched his whole belly raw to the point that it was bleeding. We took him to the vet because it was time for new shots anyway. $350 later he is still itching. The vet recommended Benadryl, and we have been giving him 50mg three times a day, we also keep the raw area on his stomach covered. But now he is not eating, he is throwing up, he doesn’t poop, and everytime he goes outside he eats grass like a lawn mower. What is wrong with my dog?

If your vet doesn’t know it’s going to be tough to find an answer on here – see another vet.
It could be as simple as he was allergic to the detergent that they washed the bedding he slept on in, or to a treat that they gave him. Maybe they treated their lawn with something that is still in his fur? Give a warm bath with oatmeal shampoo to clean off anything that could still be on him and then keep up with the benadryl. Hopefully it will clear up soon.

Definetly go to the vet, or at least call,, new symptoms could be a new problem..unrelated to the itching,, it is very possible because he felt crappy because of his skin did something stupid like eat something that upset is stomach, or now is stuck.. Dogs like to do that..
As far as the itchies.. you dog has one allergy,, and unfortunaly can develop new ones.. so it might not be the fleas but the something in the food, a inhaled allergen like smoke, pollen, cleaning product (carpet cleaner) and such and you may need to work with the vet to find what the new trigger is..
if your dog is still itching new medications, new doses and also pehaps some additional antibiotics for secondary skin infections is in order, sometimes even treatement for a yeast infection is called for.. all are secondary to the itching but need to also be treated or the benadryl and steriods only work a small amount.. talk about this with your vet..
also.. it is always possible your dog picked up sarcoptic mange.. this bugger is difficult to diaginose.. but will drive a dog mad.. and with your pet being away at another location it is very possible that he picked it up.. and is no indication of impropper care by the pet sitter.. unfortunaly only the topical Flea/tick/heartworm medication Revolution with prevent/treat this parasite.. not frontline.. as you vet about it.. you can also have a quick trial shot of ivermentin given to see the response.. This is ok and safe in all breeds except collie type breeds like Aussies, border collies shelies..
    Good luck..
    So it

sorry i wish i could answer this question. On my mind, i think he has a major flea problem or one of the other dogs does..If this happened once, don’t let it happen again

he could have developed food allergies,,, try a premium ,holistic dog food,,, see if that helps -also,, have you used carpet powders or any new floor cleaners?? he could be allergic to something like that….

Call ahead to the vet and tell them your pup may have bloat, this as this is a life threathening condition that can kill within minutes.
    Hurry!

Get him back to the vet. Sounds like an intestinal blockage.

  8. Raopya says:

Let ur dog eat the grass but be careful that he doesn’t eat any insects. dont give ur dog any non-veg food coz that will make him worse. give him lots of water and keep him in fresh atmosphere and let him play. take neem leaves put them in mixer and make its juice then pat it on ur dogs belly and when ur dog is sleeping take a wet towel and keep it on his belly but make sure that it doesn’t drip water. And if nothing helps then contact Mr.rekhesh Jain, hez 2oo good. Get to a VET now! he has either developed a new allergy or has fleas or reaction to the benadryl or WORSE!! I’d stop the benadryl and get to the vet!

You should take him back to the vet if you vet is not open on Saturday call the emergency vet and ask what they think you should do. I don’t know what it is but it is apparently more than a skin problem now. Maybe he has developed an infection or something from the open skin.
I really think you should talk to your vet again or a different vet if you don’t think yours is doing you dog right

It may also be nerves. Did you tell your vet you were out of town? He may have gotten nervous at your friends house because you weren’t there and chewed himself raw. Another possibility is that he was allergic to something at your friends house. I would talk with the vet again and let him know your pet is not improving. Call his office and ask to speak with him or leave him a message.

Go back to the vet!!!! The vet probably thought it was an allergy that was causing the itchiness. It sounds like something more serious has developed and he needs to be seen by the vet ASAP. Stop the Benadryl until you get in contact with the vet. It may just be the benadryl making his tummy upset. Good Luck

  15. tomagska says:

Could be bacterial infection. He shouldn’t have his shots until his problem has cleared up. Your vet should know.

  16. belliena says:

i recommend taking to get a second oppinion, hopefully he will be ok, but when your at your friends house check the dogs to see if they have fleas, maybe your friend gave him something to eat that he has a bad reaction to
