How Much Should A Lab X Golden Retriever Dog Be Fed?
I’m trying a new food, Sentinent Yoghurt plus for my dog-Meat is the 1st ingredient, add to that No artifical flavours. Protein 26%, Fat 12%, Fibre 4%
Note; For you who insist that dogs need more protein then this, I’ve tried 42% on my mutt, and did NOT aggree with her one bit. My mild manner, good natured dog, wouldn’t hurt a flea type dog, turned into an aggressive monster. Yes I’m not kidding. She seriously went mental, never ever seen the reaction i saw that day
So far the results are impressive-Doesn’t seem to be scratching at all, dandruff is pretty much no exsistant now and hot spot reaction have heeled completely, dog appear to have regain her puppy energy. She now 13year old born 14th of August 1996.
She quite large for her mix especially for female-42.5 the other day i weighed her at the vets. The vet said she was not too bad but did need to loose a couple of kilo’s, said her ideal weight is 38kg. I defiantly say that right, as i know the average weight for a normal labrador is 35, however that is not including the variable height-He considering her extra height. She nicknamed the gentle giant on walks.
He recommended feeding her 1cup a day and no scraps. To me this doesn’t seem much for lab mix, she does get leftover dinner scraps most nights. Other vets have recommended to feed the scaps, and the dry food as well.
The food recommend suggest 21/2-3 1/2 cups daily for her weight range-I’ve only been feeding her 2 cups, as she spayed-1 cup twice a day up until the vets. It say the weight range for 1-5kg dog is 1/2-1cup.
Note she need to go in for surgery for 1 tooth removed next week. SHe has a mild cough that appear every 2month or less-she normally just lying around or lazingly wandering around the garden when she suddendly start choking cough-it be one or two louds chokes-Sounds kinda like a cat coughing up furballs with no result. Its not when she heavily exercise-AS i can take her for 1hour walk 3-times a day and she will NOT cough one bit, neither when we come back-its not when she eating or drinking. It also happens when she gets overly excited she start coughing I worried with her age and the fact that she does this cough every now and then, how she go under anestic. But the vets given her a complete bill of health and honestly doesn’t seem worried by her cough. I’m thinking it might be plant allergies. Inside is not an option, renting the house and the dog must be 100% outside-Our rental ladies incrediable stricked, and will kick us out if we break the rules,. She gets lots of attention as well as games. I’m going to go out and buy a whole lot of new toys, as miss genevieve has a bad happened of chewing her tennis balls and any toy up in 2hours.
Her middle walk is about 20-30mintues normally and her end work about 15-20mintues. Her 1st walk about 1hour.
So is this okay to feed her this amount? I’ve increase her walks from 2 to 3times now weather permitting. She seems quite happy with the longer walks and tends to go longer then what i plan. She has mild arthritis-not yet treated as it doesn’t bother her but her food has glucosamine and omega 3 and 6. She doesn’t seem to loosing an excessive amount of weight.

OK thats a really long question, but basically you want to know if what the vet tells you is OK. He’s the vet – not us, so do what he says. Lab’s DON’T need as much as people think to eat. My old boy was overweight at 45kg – we got him to an ideal weight of about 36kg by simply keeping what we fed him the same – but cutting it down by half! Once he reached target weight we slowly increased until he remained a steady weight – always monitoring it by the weekly walk by the vet and jump on the scales.
Good luck – btw – glucosamine is great for them – helped my Lab (as well as my own knees) heaps!
Your dog can eat about 1 cup of food a day. I prefer that and then about 4-5 treats through out the day. That is the daily value for a snack through out the day. You can give her the amounts that i suggested and with that do the 20-30 minute walks everyday like you said. That’s what i do with my dog minus the 20-30 minute walks because my dog is 12 years old going on 13 soon. And she cant go very far. So i would keep doing what your doing just 1 cup a food and About 5 treats through out the day.
