i use frontline and i haven’t noticed any fleas so is there a good brand that will help with possible dry or allergy prone skin? i’ve been to the vet several times and they are no help cause they don’t know why she’s itching.

I had exactly the same problem with my pup. I used Frontline on him and he wouldn’t stop scratching for days and days, he lost a lot of hair and the poor boy had sores on him from it all. I went to the vet who recommended that he got tested for allergies. Lots of money involved. I then bathed him in tepid water and used an ordinary very mild puppy shampoo (Bob Martins Puppy Shampoo). He has never scratched since (apart from the usual itch). I looked up on the web which would be the best shampoo and oatmeal was a no no. Apparently Frontline has this adverse affect on a lot of dogs because some are very allergic to it. I have loads of it from the vets and won’t use it again!! Even the cat came up in lumps. Try it and see what happens. Rub some Vaseline into the dry patches just after you have bathed her .. it works wonders! If you can’t see the fleas don’t Frontline her again.
Have you had her allergy tested? She may be allergic to something in the environment or even in her food.
If she’s not taking anything for the itching, you can give her 1mg or Bendryl per pound of her body weight. This would cure the problem, but it may help sooth her a bit.
It sounds like a food allergy. Try switching your dog to Canidae dog food; it’s formulated to be hypo-allergenic and is very high-quality. Good luck!
Oatmeal or coal-tar shampoo is good for dry skin – but don’t overdo it! Two baths a month is PLENTY – and if she’s rolling in stuff, try hosing her off. My parents give their dog fish oil pills to help with her dry skin too.
Good luck!
Many dogs have an allergy to corn, it causes them to itch. Check you dogs for food for it and try something that doesn’t contain corn.
Oatmeal
Oatmeal…..and what is the dog itching from. Check your dog…does it have bugs of some type or is it the dog food. People don’t realize that the dog food you feed will give them 99% of the skin irritations out there. Hence…taking them to the vet and large vet bills…..sound familiar. Make sure there is NO CORN or WHEAT in the dog food. Go to a lamb and rice. You don’t have to buy expensive food and stay away from AIMS and Science Diet….look at the ingredients….it is all bad also… They just have a great marketing department, thats all. Try Diamond, or Nutra Nuggets or even Nutro…(the scare was a wake up call to some). Corn and wheat cause skin irritations. Anyway, use oatmeal and don’t spend alot of money on this either. You can even use suave. Just not alot and rinse it out good. Good luck
Try oatmeal based pet shampoo
If the oatmeal or coal tar shampoos don’t work, try tea tree oil shampoo. Also the fish oil pills may help. Many times dogs will be alergic to carpeting-dust mites. Also, give the dog pure water (spring). Good luck!
same problem once…itz the COAT…the dog’s coat needs itz own oil so it will condition itself…STOP USING SO MANY OR TOO MUCH SHAMPOO…maybe even try a shampoo that will give the coat some oil…without oil the dog will start itching…even without fleas…
