Smelly Dog?
I have a cocker spaniel. Scout doesn’t have ear problems as alot of cockers do, but he stinks! He does have some kind of allergy that causes him to itch, and scratch, and chew. The vet has always passed it off as an allergy to fleas. But we treat him regularly with atpoical flea treatment, treat the yard for 9 months or so throughout the year and have pulled up all of our carpeting to help control fleas. Frankly, I don’t think you can have a dog that goes outside any of the time and not have fleas, but we do pretty good. He has very few fleas. I think it might be an allergy to synthetics. We’ve given him Benadryl witht the vets instruction to help allieviate the itch, but nothing helps the smell. What are some easy, home remedies for a stinky dog. I don’t bathe him, he’s too big and too strong, and I can’t physically do it. He does get bathed whenever he gets his coat trimmed, 4 to 6 times a year. He’s an inside dog who loves the outdoors. Help!

I would highly recommend that you ask your veterinarian for a referral to a dermatologist.
give him a bath 24 times a day
i have a english bulldog and he has a skin problem that sounds identical to what your dog is going through. here is what it is, it is called a staphllytic infection (aka) staph infection. i have to get 2 types of meds refilled every month just like i would get my own meds refilled, ask your vet about two meds called vetalog(for itching) and cipro (antibiotic) because when they scratch they open wounds and are supseptical to more infection. now as for the smell you have to give him a bath every other day and as u said you cant do it so here is what i would do, get some hypoallergenic dog wipes from the pet store and wipe him down every other day. now here is the thing about him loving outside, this infection starts when he goes outside because the bacteria lives in the ferterlizer in the grass. this is not ferterlizer that you put down, it just naturally lives in the grass. the dog goes out and picks it up on his feet and then as soon as he licks his feet or scratches his self with his feet the infection starts to grow. the only way i can keep it under control is to get this medicine for him every month. hope this helps
ive been told that baby powder rubbed into the coat can help the smell.
my dog smells, and is severely allergic to water (in his mind!)
also, conventional dog shampoo sprays that dont need washing off cant be beaten!
I also have a cocker and so does my mom, we also have issues similar to this. There is a pill you can get which kills fleas with in 24 hours and the vet says that it is safe to give daily. My vet charges $4 a pill which is a little pricy if given daily. However, I have found that if you bathe your dog give it a pill for three days and then put advantage or frontline on him I have no more problems, we too keep our yard treated but she picks up fleas when we walk her. There is a topical ointment you can get at Pet Smart with an Oatmeal base that is a great relief to the scratching and chewing. Hope this will give you and your dog some relief. Good luck..
They do have dog cologne. Or febreeze which cleans the air. Otherwise give him a bath about once a week.
What causes you to you doubt the vet’s diagnosis exactly? Sounds perfectly reasonable to me – if the dog has a flea allergy, then ‘a few fleas’ is enough to drive him crazy! Diagnosing a flea allergy is not ‘passing it off’ – it’s a very common problem.
It’s perfectly possible for a dog not to have any fleas so long as you’re using the right products. What flea treatments are you using exactly? You’ll need something that kills both adult fleas as well as eggs and larvae on the dog, and something that effectively treats all these in the home too. Trust me when I say ANY flea treatment you get from a pet store will not work.
What did the vet say about the stinkiness? It depends what’s causing it – maybe he does just need a bath more regularly, or you could by a pet-deodoriser, you can get these in pet stores. Just get one that’s actually going to tackle the smell rather than cover it up.

Cocker Spaniels are proned to skin infections. These can cause them to smell. Buy some Pariguard shampoo and bathe him in it. If that doesn’t work take him to a different vet and have him to skin scrapping to check for infection and fungus.
You shouldn’t need to bath your dog so often. Mine get bathed every 8-10 weeks when they are groomed and they don’t stink. Consider getting a wheat free kibble, a lot of dogs develop an intolerance to wheat. Also, dogs with a yeast overgrowth stink, did your vet rule out a yeast infection?I’d probably work on what’s going into the dog to make him stink and scratch. Different food would be at the top of my list. Good luck.
We used to bath our dog once every month to keep his coat glossy and he used to smell okay. Although most dogs are bound to smell.. if you think about it they go to the bathroom everyday without wiping themselves..
