My Dog Is Losing Her Hair…does Anyone Know If This Is A Symptom Of Allergy To Fleas? Or Possibly Nerves?

Not that I have seen any fleas, but I’m very concerned for her. She is a lab mix and I think she has some pit in her. She has been staying with my mom because I’ve been in the process of moving and my mom describes her as looking like she has mange. Can a dog lose her hair…literally chew it off because of nerves? I’m about to get her back after months so I will be taking her to the vet soon, but I’d like to do anything I can for her at home to make her comfortable first.

My dog lost her fur because of a thyroid disorder, and it looked like mange, but there are many reasons besides that one. Usually it’s in the same areas for thyroid. For some dogs, the winter season is bad and they lose their fur and then get it back afterwards. Dogs oftentimes chew their hair off due to boredom. If it’s a flea or mange problem, Frontline plus can control it, or the vet may prescribe a different topical.

There are many reasons it could be that your dog is losing hair. It could be from flea allergy, but you should find some scabs all over and see a problem with the skin, like swelling or redness. There are also medical issues that can cause the problem as well. Some being a problem with organ function. I would make an appt with the vet and have the doctor run some tests to see what it could be. It may be something benign like flea allergy and easily cared for, but it could be something more serious. Dont take any chances.

Hair loss can be caused by a lot of ailments. Fleas, flea medicine, hypothyroid disease, obesity, mange, nerves, food allergies, the possibilities are endless. Research some of these issues, see if you can figure it out. Labs have skin issues, so you may have to try lots of things before you find a cure. I would start with nerves and food allergies, which cause a huge amount of problems.

dogs who chew from nervousness usually focus on a few specific spots. They rarely if ever will chew all their fur off. It is probably mange. It is irresponsible if your dog has been losing hair for months and you are just taking him to the vet now. Next time don’t wait so long. Your dog is probably very itchy and uncomfortable. It’s horrible to make him wait to get rid of that feeling.

It can be any of these things:
-Mange
-Domestic Mange(usually come with something that looks like a small case of acne)
-Hot Spots
-Rough play with other dogs
Watch your dog carefully and if it seems that there is no reason for there to be so much hair lose, contact your vet.

There are a lot of possibilities. Does she swim a lot? If so it might be hot spots.
