Help! The Fleas Are Taking Over!?

My little dog Tiara is in a lot of agony. She is allergic to flea saliva. I’ve taken her to the vet recently to get an allergy shot which usually helps. However, this time it didn’t. The vet says she should have a shot about every 3 months. Well, she had one like a month ago. I don’t know what to do. I don’t have any money to get any flea shampoo. (I wouldn’t want to use those harsh chemicals on her anyway.) Is there ANYTHING around the house I can use to get rid of the fleas? Thank you for your answers.

The Frontline medication works wonders and is safe for your pet. It sounds like you’re short on money, but your pet’s health is at stake here. If you decide to go this route, DO NOT buy the flea drops that you can get cheaply at your ordinary grocery store. These drops have an extremely high concentration of medication similar to that of Frontline and Advantage and can be dangerous. If you go with herbal remedies (citronella can help), remember that it’s an ongoing battle. There’s no such thing as washing your dog with flea shampoo and getting rid of fleas. Once they are on the dog, in your house, laying eggs and reproducing, your dog would need very regular shampooing to manage the problem, but it would not eliminate the problem.
Dawn dishwashing liquid works great. I would not use this with every bath as it can dry out the skin. After bathing, check with your vet and get the monthly flea guard. Hopefully, this will cut down on her allergic reactions to them and cut down on her chances of getting worms from the fleas, which will also need to be treated by a vet. Are the fleas bad in your home or yard for your pet to be getting reinfested? If so, check with your vet or a pet or farm supply store … Lowes or even Home Depot for help with treating your yard. Make sure what you use will be safe for your pet. Good luck with it
Taking her to the vet for allergy shots is not solving the problem You could save yourself a lot of money just by taking care of the problem. I’m sure every vet visit is more than a bottle of flea shampoo.
Get the poor thing on a K9 Advantix, Frontline, or other type of flea/tick prevenative ASAP!!! The vet should have told you that!
And then she needs to stay on it! She needs a new dose every month!
I recomend useing flea medicine from your local vet.
flea shampoo is not harmful to your dog. i use it on my dog and he is fine. you can also use flea spray, it works wonders. she will be uncomfortable for about 10 minutes, but after that, all gone! also spray the carpets (thats where they come from)
Fleas do not like garlic. Try putting garlic or garlic powder in your dogs food every day.
However I strongly suggest that you treat her with Frontline plus. They come in a package of three, but most vets will allow you to buy one vial at a time. Which is about $12 each.
Two years ago we had fleas for the first time. I was in a state of panic because I have heard such horror stories. I bought a vial for each of our 2 dogs, and, yes, I had concerns about the chemicals too. I had concerns mostly for our older dog, not only because of her age, but also because she has a skin condition. But My concern for her comfort and well-being outweighed any concern about the chemical. Neither dog suffered any side effects form the Frontline Plus. All you do is part the fur on the back of base of the neck, where the dog cannot reach, and apply it. The effects of the medicine will last a month.
That said, you will also need to flea bomb your house. PetSmart carries a two-canister kit. This is enough to bomb about a 1200 sq ft house, which is what we have. You will have to follow the directions to the letter, and leave the house while the bomb is dispersing, and remove all living things, except plants. Flea larvae can live in the house for up to a year, so you have to be dilligent in vacuuming furniture and carpets and washing all linens. I know you say you can’t afford it, but, in the long run, how can you NOT afford it?
Our flea application were a complete success, and I only had to treat them that one month. Now you need to do this simultaneously to be successful. The bomb kits aren’t really that expensive. Do it for the health and safety of your doggie.
Best of luck to you!
She really needs to be on a flea and tick preventative so that she will not break out.
If you do not like using flea shampoo you can use DAWN dish soap.
You will also need to treat your house to get rid of the fleas in there. If you do not like the idea of using chemicals, all you will need to do is vacuum your house 2x a day and they will eventually be gone.
Feed your dog garlic fleas hate the smell but you need to take care of the house because they do not live on your pets they just feed on them and then live in your furniture and carpet so i use this stuff called tenacious earth (not sure if that is the correct spelling) you sprinkle it on the carpet and brush it in with a broom do not vac it up and wipe down your couch with it leave it it is perfectly safe for your animals and kids to walk on I would also sprinkle it in your yard just to cover all bases. You can find the tenacious earth at your local home depot or lowes
if you have you own yard go to hardware store get lime in cement section of store put all over grass fleas cand live in acidic conditions good luck this will work put all over yard bushes will actuly help grass grow if you live in apartmen do it at night no one will no it was you becool dont telll …
