Does My Dog Have The Mange Or An Allergy?
I found a dog on the side of the road. She has very dry skin. It itches her very badly. She does not smell bad at all like people say when dogs have the mange. She had a few bald patches but not big gaps just a light spots where hair is missing. She only had a few ticks on her when we picked her up. No fleas at all. Which I thought was unusual since it is summer and she was out in the woods. I have bathed her and bought hotspots spray and stuff for dry skin. It is slowly clearing up but she still scratches so bad she makes sores. I don’t know anything about the mange but she don’t smell, she don’t have huge bald spots, she has very dry skin. So is this just a dry skin problem that needs some conditioner and some moisture, or is it more serious?

You bought the hotspot spray, you probably bought shampoo conditioner all that costly stuff, it would of been much cheaper to go to the vet and get it checked out. It is about 30-50 dollars for a skin scraping to check for mange, if the dog does have mange it has to be treated by a vet, they do not sell the cure over the counter. It is impossible to diagnose unless you do the skin scrape, if price is an issue, just call around to some vets and price check on a skin scrape and make sure they tell you if they charge an exam fee as well, vca’s are allover the country(thats where i work) and they are fairly cheap, your first exam fee is usually 30 dollars off or free so you will be able to get off pretty cheap with the test, Oh by the way mange is zoonotic, small children are very high risk to catching it, it may even be like scabies to them, be very careful with this, make sure you get it taken care of for the dogs sake and your family. good luck.
Wow! What great questions to ask a vet.
Seriously, without seeing it, no one can tell you what to do about a random rash.
See a vet.
Could be what’s known as “hot spots”. I’d take her to the vet to be checked out and to get some relief no matter what it is.
because of heat it happens
i have no clue about mange, but my border collie had a similar problem. her hair fell out in places, she scratched more off, made sores, and her skin turned a bruised shade of purple. it turned out to be a flea allergy that was quickly treated with some pills the vet gave us. (my dog also has chronic dry skin. you can fix that with baby shampoo or MILD puppy shampoo. as for giving the dog pills, i just wrapped them in warm pickle slices held closed with peanut butter.)
if the dog has long or dark hair, it’s very possible that either you missed the fleas or her itches came from a mosquito bite. ticks stay stuck in the skin, but fleas wash off with water. if very few fleas were present, they may have washed away unnoticed. just take her to a vet to check her skin. tell him you found ticks too (idk anything about lime disease either, except its carried by ticks).
in the meantime, try rubbing a little plain, unscented lotion on her sores. that might ease the itching and stop her from hurting herself more.
btw: ur doing a great thing saving her. i hope this helps both of you.
