Question :

I am desperate to get on top of these allergies though tests have shown none of them are food allergies all came back negative have allergies to environment it is a nightmare trying to get my wonderful dog right she is all dry and itchy, she is under vets care but I want to do everything I can, so what food is the best money can buy and will I be able to get it in the UK thanks for your help and I am doing everything I can to avoid the cause of the allergies.

Answer 1 :

If she has no allergies to food, then it doesn’t matter the brand, except don’t buy the cheap stuff. Go to your local feed store and they’ll have some really great stuff for skin products for dogs, especially allergy prone dogs.

Answer 2 :

I agree with the 1st answer – raw feeding. I’ve been using it for over 25 yrs.
Google BARF (bones and raw food) for more information & I believe there is a Yahoo group on raw feeding.
You don’t necessarily have to spend a lot of money to find the best diet for your dog.

Answer 3 :

Avoid foods with lots of fillers- especially corn or wheat products or any rice protein concentrate. Look for meat that is identified- oftentimes dogs may be sensitive to some brands of meat like to chicken or to lamb commonly used in dog foods. In that case it’s good to look for a healthy brand with Venison, Duck or Fish and vary the diet.
Some brands that are great that I don’t know if they are available there include Orijen (Canadian made), Canidae and Wellness.
Otherwise you might consider a home cooked diet for your dog. That may make a big difference in the coat.
I have found a blend that works good for my dogs and it’s Nature’s Recipe Venison and Rice, sometimes I vary with Duck and Fish blends of the same brand.
I also add a Vet approved fish oil capsule and sprinkle some brewer’s yeast on their food. This had been great for their coats (two of my three dogs had very bad skin conditions when I got them. So I went through a lot to find what worked for them. Also, the blends I recommended were not recalled during the recent recalls that were so bad.)
Don’t over-bathe your dog- and ask your Vet about a prescription formula for your dogs skin condition.
There are even some oils you can massage into a dog’s coat, but ask your Vet about this.
I think your BEST BET, is a HOME COOKED balanced diet and add the fish oil and brewer’s yeast.http://www.drpitcairn.com/nutrition/nutr…
I have never bought this book, but heard during the food scare that this was a good reference for home cooked diet. I used a home cooked diet that a friend had been advised to use by her Vet.
Hope your dog will be well!

Answer 4 :

HALO brand.
go to halopets.com
It is all natural and the healthiest food out there. They also have special supplements that could help your dog with her allergies.

Answer 5 :

LAMB is usually the best meat choice for dogs with food allergies.

Answer 6 :

If your vet hasn’t found any skin parasites in or on your dog, her dry itchy skin could be her diet. Sounds like she needs some oil in her food. Give her chicken and rice kibble and twice a week add a teaspoonful of olive oil to it. Linseed oil is also very good for dry/itchy skins. You don’t say what size your dog is but if it is large or very large a tablespoon of oil twice a week can benefit. Sometimes animals react to household cleaners, especially those used on the floos where the dog lies down. If you use stuff like shake n vac – stop.

Answer 7 :

This is going to sound trite but it is the truth: one without the allergen in it. the problem is, finding that allergen. Your dog will be put on a diet with protein and grain sources that he was never exposed to (like sorghum and kangaroo). Then, one by one, foods will be added until a reaction occurs. Then, any food that does not have that allergen in it can be fed.

Answer 8 :

I had the same problem. I feed all of my pets the raw diet. It is rather intense in the beginning switching from dry to raw. Read as much as you can on it. My dog is cured!

Answer 9 :

I have learnt by my mistakes. My present dog had dreadful problems because of the food which I gave her, I experimented with dog food, I tried raw diets, cooked diets and over the years I tried various dog foods. She did not like the raw diets and the dog food that I gave her resulted in diarrhoea. As an experienced dog owner I introduced any changes gradually. Nevertheless my dog still had problems. She was eight years old before I resolved her problem.
Eventually, because of my researches on the Internet I found that the experts have discovered that GRAIN in our dog’s diet causes many problems. I now know that grain creates acidity in the blood. This causes skin problems, sickness, diarrhoea, anal gland problems etc.,
If your dog has skin problems or any of the above problems PLEASE CHANGE THE DIET. Avoid Grain, rice, beef derivatives and dairy food
I now give my dog a dried food which uses beet for fibre and fish. It’s called Fish4Dogs and I buy it on the Internet. Look on the Internet and investigate yourself. Gluten free dog food is not enough to help our dogs, it MUST BE GRAIN FREE.
A rapid change of diet will upset your dog; any change of diet must be done gradually. Do please change to a grain free diet. I have had sixteen dogs throughout the years and they have had various problems. Perhaps if I had known about the dangers of GRAIN they would have had fewer problems.
