My puppy has fleas. I’ve tried to get rid of them!?
Hi All,
So my 8 month old lab mix pup has fleas. I live in a city, but there are some patches of grass around, as well as a doggie park nearby. My pup has been spending time at another place more in the burbs, and that house has an outdoor cat as well. We use Frontline on the cat, but still find fleas when we give him the occaisional flea combing.
So, for the pooch we first tried BioSpot drops for his neck & hindquarters. They could be considered off brand, but we were trying to be cheap. We also supplemented it with a flea/tick collar because we were going hiking that day.
30 days came and went, and we weren’t overly concerned. We did still notice fleas–we figured it was because it was cheaper than, say, Frontline. We were in a pinch, so we did another 30 day dose.
Near the end of the 30 day run, we got some flea shampoo. I can’t recall the brand, but I know I got it from a PetSmart that didn’t have a vet sponsoring it. We gave him another shampooing a few days later (a bit earlier than the recommended 7-10 period) and still noticed fleas within a short period.
A neighbor in the burbs with a similar dog recommended K9 Advantix, saying that his dog is flea/tick free & his dog arguably spends more time in a wooded/grassy area. Reading the packaging for K9 Advantix revealed an abundance of warnings for killing cats (more so than BioSpot).
So we broke down and got some Frontline for his next dose…also overlapping the shampooing & the last day or so of the BioSpot dose. We figured it was okay since he still had fleas.
Well he definately has less fleas on him now…maybe 4-5 instead of closer to 7-10+. Still though, this doesn’t make sense to me. I’ve had dogs in the past (albeit with less outdoorsy exposure) and never even seen a flea. I feel so bad when I see him chomping away at his fur. We noticed that the base of his tail had a small hairless patch and read that it may be due to allergies to the fleas.
Help! How can we accomplish his fleadom (keep in mind the outdoor cat)?
Thanks in advance,
Flea-Ridden Owner

Why don’t you just take the dog to the vet???
if you keep using all the meds for flea and it doesn’t rid of them then you most probably have the fleas inside your home…they can be everywhere and you might not even notice it.that’s why your dog keeps getting them…the flea medicine/shampoo will get rid of them for a little bit…but then your dog lays on his bed or on the carpet (wherever the fleas are) and he gets them again. go to a local pet store or even walmart…they sell things like flea bombs for your home.after doing that to your house..then treat your dog once more to make sure you get them all.
^^^ Agreed with TWILIGHT RULES
OR you could try some flea Shampoo but your best bet would still be the Vets
Flea bomb your house, wash his bedding or replace it, and spray the outdoor areas with fleakiller.
You might have to start with a “flea dip”. You actually put your dog into a large tub filled with water and chemicals that kill all the fleas. Your vet can do it for you, or some larger pet stores will sometimes have a day long event which is cheaper. Then you treat monthly with flea medicine. As for the Bio-Spot – sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. My father in law has great luck with it. All he has is one dog and no other pets. It doesn’t work on my dog, and we also have 2 cats. Maybe that has something to do with it.
Shampoo has no residual effect on fleas so other than cleaning dog it doesn’t help at all. Depending on your flea area they could have built up a resistance to Frontline or Advantage. Frontline here stopped working several years ago. Advanatage is fine for dogs & cats & Advantix is fine for dogs also kills mosquitoes which is why I use it. You can’t apply Advantix on cats but is fine to use on dogs even with cats in the house once it has dried. However you need to vacuum thoroughly daily & treat home & any yard space dog is. Stop going to dog park – besides picking up fleas, you are infesting other ppl dogs with fleas from your dog.
The House and Garden
Find fleas crossing your threshold.Sprinkle borax soap around the area to keep them out of the house.
Your animals love your furniture. So do the fleas.Sprinkle borax onto the carpet, on the furniture, and in your furniture. Use an old seasoning shaker, labeled to keep it away from the food preparation area.
Add a bit of salt to your vacuuming.Sprinkle it on the floor and vacuum the area. The salt and borax will kill any fleas that find their way into your vacuum cleaner bag,
Shake a layer of salt onto your furniture and floor and leave it overnight. Vacuum in the morning, and throw out the bag.
Spray flea control nematodes.[7] These beneficial microbes work by killing them while in the developing stage, where they live in the soil. This disturbs their life cycle, lessening their numbers.
[edit] TipsWash your linens and your pet’s linens frequently. This will help lessen the flea population. Give bath in Dawn dish soap and fallow up with Frontline I use Skin so soft from Avon. Goole it it’s great
i agree with the pet dip. You can buy the concentrated formula at walmart in the petsection (hartz) or take him to a groomer or a vet…but you MUST bomb your house. By the way flea collars do NOTHING!!!! My cats were over run with fleas last summer and I tried everything. The only thing that works was a flea bomb (or 8 lol) and a flea dip. Try an outside insecticide and shaving you dog with the dip and bombs.
