Question by geovannafraga: Help with My beagle’s digestion problem? what diet/food should i follow? wellness/raw diet?
Hello everyone. I am hoping to get some advice on the following issue. I have a beagle puppy (about to be 6 months in April) and he’s had digestion problems all along (i got him from a store… yes i know! the worse thing i could’ve done… but i love him now). Here is a timeline of the different things I’ve tried:
1. The was being fed Eukanuba at the per store. He hated this food, he would not eat it and had diarrhea, and mushy stools. I quickly changed his food to Taste of The Wild. He was 2 months
2. While on TOTW, he could not eat the kibble is was way too hard for him, and he was always sneezing and a scab started appearing on top of his head. So researched and through he might be allergic to this high-protein food. So I got him something that had less protein… so we went with Nutro Natural Choice (chicken and oatmeal for sensitive stomachs) I also added moisted food.. which he does like a lot.
3. He was doing ”good” on this, but he started stinking A LOT. Having horrible gas that could kill anyone in the room. So i decided to feed him better quality food, and I went with Wellness Puppy food. I havent finish the transition yet. I started this week.
I feed him 3 times a day, 1/4 cup each time (vet said this is the amount he should eat). I always give him his kibble with a little wet food (one time i just gave him kibble and he eats it so fast he threw up).
He is also NEVER satisfied and tried to eat everything he can get his mouth on.
I give him treats, probably way too many because he seems to be so hungry all the time. I give chicken fillets from BeefEaters, banana and chicken treats from Wellness. To try to keep his calories down.. i’ve given him banana, carrots, watermelon and apples… is this ok? nothing seems to change when i give him fruits, and it takes him longer to eat it than when i give him “dog treats”.
His stools have never been consistant. He goes hours after eating, and I’ve always read they should be going to the bathroom almost right away? And his poop is NEVER hard, always soft… and is hard to clean up. It has become so STINKY, i almost want to gag. He has also developed a bad body odor (not just regular puppy smell), and his bed/crate stink. I try washing it once or twice a week.
His eating schedule/bowel movement:
– He eats in the morning at 6am and will go poop at around 12-12:30 pm.
– Lunch at 1pm. Sometimes will poop around 5:30-6pm, and sometimes not.
– Will eat dinner around 7pm. If he went to the bathroom at 5:30 – 6pm he wont go again until the next morning. And when he goes to the bathroom… is like 2-3 times, and its A LOT.
I’ve been researching about the raw diet, and i am now wondering if this is what he needs. Or if i should keep him on Wellness.. see if he gets better. Until now, i dont see any change. Should i now be feeding 2 a day? when should i change from 3 to 2?
I dont want to keep switching, and maybe messing him up even more. I am hoping i can get some suggestions.
Are soft stools normal? Caused by the wet food? Should i switch to raw diet? May this help his stomach/bad odor/allergies? (He is always putting his paws in his mouth… licking biting them) He doesnt have any fleas, but he is ALWAYS scratching.
I am sorry if this is a lot, i am (obviously) a first-time dog owner. Thank you for reading.
one quick question, I’ve read to give a raw egg is great for a dog, but… with shell and all? just like that? would he even know ot eat it? or should i open it for him?

I have fed a raw food diet for 14 years, to Yorkies and Border Collies, puppies and adults. They eat what nature intended, which does not include cereals (no kibble) etc. There are some very good books, email lists and web sites that will help you learn and understand about raw feeding.
I am including some links below which IO hope you will find useful.
Well done for taking responsibilty for feeding your dog this way.
