Question by Banthedeednotthebreed: Dog food on a budget? Two dogs with two different needs, what should we do?
Okay so my husband had to take a bit of a pay cut as of yesterday and we are on one income as it is at the moment.

I was about to switch my Terrier mix to a food that would be better for her. I don’t feel that she is getting everything she needs from the food we are currently feeding her. At one point I had all the dogs on California Natural and they all seemed to be doing fine. But its such a limited diet. My poodle has a lot of allergies and gastrointestinal issues and this has been the best food for him. My Terrier mix though is a bit bigger a more sporty type dog and very athletic and we feel that feeding her such a limited diet is doing more harm than good. And possibly has something to do with her recent injury.

Well feeding two different foods at the moment is going to add up really fast. Now a week or two ago that wouldn’t have been an issue at all. -70 a month or so wouldn’t have been a big deal. But right now on the CN we are feeding the two of them for dollars a month and that helps. But I don’t want to put a price on my dogs health and I don’t feel like she is getting everything she needs from this food.

An option I thought about was getting a small bag of Orijen and putting that in her treat ball so that she gets a little extra with her CN meal, she really likes Orijen. But I’m afraid that would really mess up her tummy, what do you think. I know she needs a better quality kibble, I would like to have her on something like Innova. I’m probably going to have to bite the bullet here and just put them on two seperate foods. I mean each bag would last each dog atleast a month, so really we wouldn’t be spending more, just a lot would be spent at once.

I probably sound horrible.

What foods would you recommend for my girl or what do you recommend we try doing?
Add: I just had a baby so I am a full time mom at the moment, what I would make in a job wouldn’t even be enough to cover daycare.

You need to consider your wallet before anything else and to make sure that other household expenses are covered. No one here can tell you how much you can or should spend on dog food.
Find one that will do for both dogs and feed it to them. Let the food gestapo scream from the roof tops as loud as they want, many dogs eat Purina their entire lives and never have anything anything wrong with them, including working and show dogs. Hope I helped!!

Question by Banthedeednotthebreed: Need to find a new dog food. What would be best for my dog?
Now that its been confirmed that the company that owns Iams and Eukanuba are buying out Natura Pet Products I guess its time to look for a new food. If they don’t change the ingredients or quality no big deal but if they do I feel its better to be proactive and have a different food in mind.

They own Iams and Eukanuba, gross!!! So I just want to be prepared.

My dog has eaten California Natural for years. Its the only food he has ever been able to handle without getting deathly ill. He has gastrointestinal issues and digestive issues and food allergies. We have tried several different foods and the only one he has ever been able to eat is California Natural Herring and Sweet Potato.

I need to find a food that he will be able to tolerate…..

Foods we know he can’t tolerate: Anything with corn in it is a no no but here is a list of foods he can’t tolerate: (Foods he has eaten in the past and had issues with: Science Diet, Iams, Purina One, Beneful, Pedigree, Maxximum Nutrition, Diamond Natural, Blue Buffalo, Wellness, Solid Gold. I don’t know why he couldn’t handle Wellness or Blue Buffalo but he couldn’t)

What he needs in a food:
He needs a food that is low in fat (Gastro issues)
He needs a food that has limited to no fillers: He can’t handle corn and has trouble with a lot of grains/wheat. He can’t handle chicken either, don’t know why. He needs a fish based food, seems to do best on those.
He needs a food with no dyes
He can’t have anything too high in protein because it messes with his digestive system.

California Naturals has been perfect but if they change it in the slightest I’m going to need a new food because he can’t handle a lot.

I need something that compares to California Naturals Herring and Sweet potato for him.

Thanks so much

We sometimes give him merrick and he does okay with it, but not as well as he has done on CN.
Integra type R: He came from a bad breeding situation. He has never been a healthy dog, but he is a good dog. No he is not a PITA, he just requires a little more care than most dogs. And he is a bit more expensive
FYI: Naturapet that was bought out includes: Innova, Evo, California Natural
CJRossi: I’d rather be safe than sorry. I’d rather have a back up brand in mind then them change it and I get caught off guard with a sick dog

Rice. Sounds like your dog is a PITA.

Question by Marissa: dog food question i need highest quality food suggestions?
I have an american bulldog (roxy 11 months) and a pitbull (dax 6 months) and they’re on nutro ultra large breed puppy holistic. They seem to be doing well on it roxy has food allergies and I’ve tired almost all the non holistic foods such as science diet purina eukanuba iams royal canin and so on. So I’m on a budget and what I’m feeding is as much as I can afford its for 30lbs and I use exactly 2 in a month I can’t afford to spend more than 0 a month on dog food but id like to find out about some of the highest quality foods I don’t imagine I can pay less $ for the food but id just like to know my optionson if I can get an even higher quality for what I pay now. On here I’ve heard that what I feed is “low quality” but it works well for them roxys food allergies are bad she breaks out in lumps gets soars in her paws inside her mouth on her stomoch she gets the runs and vomiits she gets fungus on her skin and ‘mults’ goes bald! that’s what I get for feeding her bad food so please don’t reccomend anything low quality with loads of corn and preservatives such as science diet and purina. Also they need large breed puppy formula

I use solid gold and my dog loves it. Ive heard good reviews about blue buffalo but i tried it and it gave my dog an upset stomach. Evo is also very good.

Q&A: I need help choosing the BEST dog food?

Question by Live~Laugh~Love: I need help choosing the BEST dog food?
I have small breed dogs that have allergies, they itch all the time, rub there faces on the carpet and get ear infections all the time. Im not feeding the best of foods right now.My questions are:

Will too much fiber or protein hurt or cause problems in small breed dogs?

Thanks in advance
What is the best less expensive food that is grain free?

Im interested in Taste Of The Wild, which would be the best formula for dogs with allergies?

Question by Banthedeednotthebreed: Major dog food dilemma. One dog needs a more balanced food one can’t handle it. whats a good food for both?
My one dog a small 8lb dog needs a food low in fat and protein or he gets very sick she he is on California Naturals Herring and Sweet potato. (He has had pancreatitis and other gastrointestinal issues CN has been the best food ever for him with those issues and his food allergies, he also can’t tolerate corn)

My other dog is a larger (still a small dog) more sporty dog, a Terrier mix who is extremely athletic, she needs a more balanced diet. We feel feeding her such a limited diet is causing her more harm than good.

We thought about putting her on Innova and leaving him on California Naturals but that just doesn’t seem to be option right now. (That would be around a month vs …then again them each having their own bag would last them 2 months each…so it may be doable…a 15lb bag of CN lasts the 2 of them a month)

So in the meantime I need a food they will both thrive and be healthy on, any suggestions?
The issue with getting the two different foods roughly 30 bucks a piece is spending the a month vs . Its all that money coming out at once on a budget. I’d like to have them on the same food

Try a vegetarian dry food. Then add some meat to the active one’s meals.
