Question by cj: What kind of dog food should I feed?
I have an Australian Shepherd GSD mix, he is around a year and a half old. The vet said his recent chewing maybe OCD or allergies he is also scratching his facing and sneezing a lot. Been to the vet 7 times since mid January for pulling off the pads of his feet and the fur and skin in between his toes.
The vet suggested changing foods to Science Diet, before grain by merrick, or go to the store and look for food that doesn’t have grain in it. He is currently on IAMS large breed, he has been on iams since we got him as a pup. He has lost 8 pounds since February and is now underweight.
I was wondering if anyone has had a dog with allergies and what food worked for them to see if i can make this end quicker for him?
We have rewashed everything in the house with the hypo allergenic detergent, removed all air fresheners, changed bowls from ceramic to metal.

Question by pansyblue: Need to feed different food to one dog, They are resisting. How do I feed them seperately?
They are used to having the same food, and out all day. Now I try to feed one while the other one is out, visa versa, they neither of them will eat! Like they’re used to eating together? It’s been three days. When I have one in, one out and put food down, the one in turns up their nose and won’t eat!
One has allergies, (yeast infec. ears) and I can’t afford to feed expensive allergy food to both dogs when the other one doesn’t need it.
I have always fed purina one, out all the time. I havn’t had any problems, good weight ect. Having it out all the time has been fine for me for years.
Now I’m trying Natural Balance allergy formula for the one with ear infec. But eveidently they’re used to eating together and don’t want to eat when the other one is out. I don’t talk to them, I just put it down and leave. It’s been three days now.

Just feed them together at separate ends of the room. I have 4 dogs, 2 on different food for allergies and that’s what I do.
You can also put some gravy on their food. They will be so busy enjoying their own food that they won’t be bothered with the other’s. I use nu-pro, it’s a nurtitional supplement that makes a nice gravy that the dogs love!

Question by Mallory: Could these be skin allergies or mites?
My dog has become very itchy lately. She’s a year old, and it only began this summer, with the start of the warmer weather.
Yesterday she had a few spots of fur missing on her tail. Today, there’s huge chunks that are missing. She doesn’t have fleas. We keep her very up to date on all flea medication, and I honestly don’t believe, since she was a puppy anyways, that she has a single flea on her at all.
I switched her dog food. I bought a better brand with no corn or anything like that in it. But it hasn’t made a difference.
I also tried putting vegetable oil in her food, which has helped with her coat, but not the itching.
I gave her benadryl, and she stopped itching a little bit, but I think that’s because it makes her so drowsy, that she just wants to go straight to bed. And I don’t want her feeling like that all day.
The only place that really bothers her is her tail, and back end. When I looked where the fur had been missing, there were a bunch of little red bumps and scabs from where she’d been chewing. It’s been going on for about 3 weeks to a month. What else could it be?
And are there any over the counter things I can get for her or should we just go straight to the vet?

Question by Sabrina: My dog will not stop scratching and biting. Ive tried bathing him in doggy oatmeal bath and everything.?
I am not sure what else to do. He just started doing it this badly about a couple weeks ago… He has always been very itchy, I just thought it was dandruff or something. But it has got to the point where he was bit and scratched bald spots.
I have not changed his food or dog shampoo or flea treatment so I am honestly lost here and I really am not in a financial place to take him to the vet here… They want 0 for the allergy test. So Please help.

If you’re willing to try then the raw diet often solves the problem. Not always but often.
If I was in your position I would definitely try it. I feed raw anyway because I believe it is far healthier and not because my dogs have allergies, but I have known people change because of the allergy and amazed at the results within a few weeks.
It is worth a try.
