Question by Sadie M: Need some dog advise…Any help would be so helpful.?
Ok here is my problem. I have a mixed dog who is about 4 years old and she is mixed with pitt. chow, ands German shepard. She is about 58 lbs. and my problem is I need to know how to treat her itching and biting her skin constantly. She only does it around the spring and summer so I thought it was hot spots but now I’m not so sure. A friend of mine said maybe allergies but to what I have no idea. I know that she is getting ready to go into heat because she cleans herself all the time. but she also have alot of ear infections I take her to the vet and gave her meds for the ear infection but I would like to know if anyone else could tell me about the hot spots like what causes them and what I could do for them and how do I find out if she really has allergies. Now about the dog food I feed her Purina and she hardly ever eats it. I mean I soak it and she eats it better but she goes thought times where she won’t eat for a while. Thank you in advance for any help. By the way: I love my dog and she goes to the vet and I don’t want any rude comments. I would like help any help or advise you could give me . Thank you again.

Basset Hound puppy and diarrhea issues…?

Question by Zeffer: Basset Hound puppy and diarrhea issues…?
I have a 4 months old Basset Hound. He is very energetic, playful and the vet said very very healthy. But he has the on going issue of diarrhea at times. I have been feeding him California Natural, which is a great food. Simply Chicken Meal and Rice, however it is very rich. The vet said they do not believe the occasional diarrhea is something to be to alarmed about with him at this point they think it is simply the food and advised me to change it as California Natural is very rich and high in calories and it may just be too much for his sensitive stomach. Yesterday I bought a bag of Blue Buffalo. A very good food also. Last night I fed him 75% of his old food, 25% of the Blue. Also this morning and afternoon. This evening he developed severe squirting diarrhea. I am SO frustrated at this point! Not with him but the situation. Then of course due to the diarrhea he is chugging water, which is good so he does not get dehydrated but he is urinating like crazy.
I was looking at some dog foods for sensitive stomach and came across “Natural Balance, Sweet Potato and Fish” and read some really positive reviews from people who had the same issues with their dogs. I was wondering if anyone has used this food. My only concern with it is that is is a limited diet food. The first ingredient being Sweet Potato and that is is grain free. From what I understand you do not want to necessarily put a dog on grain free food unless it does have allergies because otherwise they may develop them and if you switch foods you may have problems. I am just so dam frustrated at this point I am willing to try anything. I am so concerned about my pup that I am not enjoying him this past few days. I want him to be healthy AND happy of course. I was going to buy a bag of the Natural Balance and begin switching him over until Monday when I can speak to his vet who I really trust and see what she says.
Any experience with this issue?

STOP switching his food. Dogs… can’t handle it. We use Costco lamb formula… Blue, and natural balance cost $ 50.

Costco only $ 22 for like 35 lbs.

It is also VERY highly rated… in fact higher than blue and natural. I know this because we used the same brands b4 costco.

another trick I learned is pure pumpkin. NOT the pumpkin pie mix… but rather PURE pumpkin. They sell it at your local grocery store in a can… just make sure NOT to buy the pumpkin pie mix. The Label must say 100% pure pumpkin.

Mix one big spoon full every meal. You’ll notice the difference in about 2-3 days.

URGENT! Help! My dog is having problems!?

Question by Kellyn: URGENT! Help! My dog is having problems!?
I have a chiuaua dauschund mix. I also have 2 labs. My 1 lab has terrible allergies. We just got a venison potato dog food for the 3 dogs. the lab with allergies and my overweight lab both love it and are reacting well, but we think it could be causing some problems with our chiweenie. She is shaking, almost like seizing, isnt really foaming at the mouth, more of the white milky stuff, like when your dehydrated. She is really stiff, switching between being stiff in her front and her back. she is 3 years old and 8 pounds. Any ideas would be wonderful. this is urgent!

oh, and we got some stuff for our lab with allergies. it is hotspot cream. could that cause it? we also have a pool. she has never reacted badly to the chlorine, but anything is possible.

thanks in advance! and hurry!
We are trying to get in touch with our vet, but it keeps ringing busy. she’s bouncing back a little, but we need something to hold her over until we can get in touch with the vet.
we just got the new dogfood yesterday, so this morning was the first time any of them had the venison and potato. She is doing better now. She’s always had a low blood sugar problem, so we gave her some molasses (what the vet said we should give her when she was a pup), and she’s doing better. We got through to the vet and they said that it seems urgent to us but it is actually most likely just dehydration or she got overheated – they said to let her rest and give her the sugar like we did and keep pumping water into her. They told us that if it got worse to bring her in, but it seems just to be a result of the heat that we are experiencing in our city right now.

Does anyone feed Wellness Super 5 Mix?

Question by Bordeaux: Does anyone feed Wellness Super 5 Mix?
My dog is about 14 months old, almost 26 pounds and very active. He was diagnosed with environmental allergies about 1 month ago. A little over 2 weeks ago I switched him from Purina ProPlan shredded chicken to Wellness Super 5 Mix Whitefish and Sweet Potato formula after much research and cost/benefit analysis. This formula is also supposed to help dogs with allergies. He was doing fine on the Purina, but his constant itching and little skin rashes got me worried he might be allergic to something in that formula even though the vet assures me he does not appear to have food allergies.

He ate the Wellness food for two weeks with no problems at all. Yesterday he threw up all of his morning meal 1 hour after eating and then vomited again at around 1 pm. I took him to the vet, and after the examination, x-rays, and a $ 250 bill I was sent home with a diagnosis of “gastritis.” Besides a huge lecture about how the “trendy” foods are not any better for the dog than Iams or Purina, the only thing the vet had to say was that the food had nothing to do with the vomiting episodes. So he has an upset stomach with no known cause.

Could he be reacting to something on the food? Has anyone here ever fed this food and had the same experience? The dog is a little sleepy and tired today, and he has done a lot of licking his lips and gulping, but he has not vomited again. No diarrhea so far either.
Blunt Object: Unless you are feeding your dog homemade food that you grow yourself, you are also making decisions based on advertising and marketing. Before implying that I’m a sucker, you should think about your own decision-making process.

As for the other answerers, he was not switched gradually because he had been switched from Iams to Purina cold turkey without any problems before. If that was the problem, wouldn’t he have started vomiting within 1 or 2 days?

And yes, he could’ve eaten something odd, but nothing showed up on the x-rays so the vet really didn’t think that was the case. I caught him licking a chocolate wrapper the day before, but I am 100% sure there was no chocolate left. Could just a whiff of chocolate have this effect on a dog? I can’t believe it would…
