PET ALLERGIES:pet allergies?

Question by brutal s: PET ALLERGIES:pet allergies?
I have a border terrier. She is about 8yrs old now. She showed signs of allergies at one point when we lived in Colorado but that was short lived. Then 4 yrs ago we moved to Palm Springs California and she has been miserable. She licks herself 24/7. I’ve tried changing her diet, baths, flea collars, numerous trips to the vet with blood tests and no results. Allergy shots only give her a 7-10 rest. She ends up raw. She just licks her paws and whines. She scooches across the carpet on her tummy. And she is huge. she should only weigh about 14lbs and she’s 22-26lbs. They thought at one point she had cushings disease. I can’t afford to just keep getting blood tests and allergy shots. She seems to be worse after the allergy shot wears off. She starts to sneeze for a while after. I now have her on raw foods, no commercial. The suppossed allergen free dog foods didnt make a difference either. Can you help.

Ask your vet to give your dog a cortisone shot of dexamethasone and to dispense follow up dexamethasone tablets to keep the cortisone in the system longer. That will prevent the rebound you are seeing after the shot wears off. The tablets are relatively inexpensive.

what type of Puppy Food is best?

Question by Michelle: what type of Puppy Food is best?
I feed my dog taste of the wild because she has a grain allergy. I just got a new puppy and would also like to have him on a grain free dog food, but when I when to the store I did not see any grain free puppy foods are there any? Right now he is on Iams healthy naturals, because that is what the humane society was feeding him I figure to much change at once would not be wise, but when I start to switch his food I would like to have the highest quality of food. What brands are best in the puppy stages? On the bag and web sites for T.O.T.W. it says for all stages, but my pup is a chi mix and he still has a hard time chewing puppy formulated food so the T.O.T.W would not be good. I do not want to feed wet formula food only dry.
I mean I gave him one piece of the TOTW and he could no break it at all. I tried soaking it and he wouldn’t touch it, so I would like other brand suggestions. And the puppy formula is hard it takes him a while to chew it.

You can feed TOTW, just water it down and make it soft for him, since the kibble is small I happen to know that small breed dogs can eat this as my friend has a Pom and a Min Pin and they have no problems with it.

Just soak it in warm water till it’s soft enough for him to eat.

Q&A: is it food allergy or mange?

Question by Jackie: is it food allergy or mange?
I rescued my lab mix puppy back in March and she’s had white flakes on her since day 1 (easy to see as she’s black, brown and white). I figured it was dandruff as I live in Calgary, AB so I bathed her once a week in oatmeal & aloe shampoo.
She began to scratch much more so when she went in for her shots the vet put her on Revolution which would be 1 of 3 times she’d have it.
The puppy got a red rash, almost like hives, on her belly so I phoned the vet and they suggested it was a food allergy, so we switched to a non-poultry, non-grain food…rash persisted.
We went back this past week for her last shots before she’s fixed and let the vet know that I’d called in the previous week (we go to a vet clinic where they have three different vets working) about the rash, they did a skin scrape for mites and it came back negative but she put her on Benadryl and Cephalexin and said to come back in three days.
We went back and it was a different vet this time (tried to get the previous one but she wasn’t working when she told us to come back). They did another skin scrape and it came back negative and I also brought it to their attention that she’d been biting at her front legs where about an inch in diameter of hair has been chewed off, it’s white dandruff looking skin and she’s still scratching but losing hair no where else.
They gave her the second round of Revolution and told me she’d do some research on it and get back to me. She called that afternoon and said they think she ‘may’ have scabies so to come in that day for a lime dipping bath. I made the appointment, acting like a new mother wanting her puppy to be better. I looked it up online and was hesitant to take her after reading the high amount chemicals involved but figured the vet was the expert.
I took her and then picked her up a couple hours later, smelling like rotten eggs and her white fur turned yellow, hoping it would be better. She actually scratched more that evening than before.
I phoned the rescue agency the next day and they said that my puppy’s mother never had it and the other pups were healthy. She told me in all her years they’d only had two dogs with it and only used a lime dipping as a last resort when no hair was left.
I’m going to another vet this week to get a second opinion but I’m wondering is this previous vet just trying to suck me dry at $ 57 a bath plus $ 25 for each round of Revolution (two weeks apart when the box says a month apart) because they said they’d do all this and if it didn’t work then they’d see if it’s a food allergy.
I want the best for my puppy but I feel they’re just in it for the money.
She goes to see another vet on Wednesday.
She’s not scratching behind her ears.
She’s been switched from Horizon’s Holistic puppy food to Orijon fish formula. She’s been on it for 4 weeks.

Allergies in dogs?

Question by mtpkt74: Allergies in dogs?
A lady called me today.. She bought a dog from a puppymill (the one I asked about in previous YA) and she cannot get a response from them about the puppy. The puppy is 6 months old and has been breaking out in different parts of its body, stomach , head, back, face, by the tail. After numerous times to the vet they finally said the puppy is a special needs puppy, that he will have to be put on special food and has to be bathed every 3 days? I thought that was a little harsh. (the batheing every 3 days) the breed is a Great Dane. I have myself never come by this problem in the 5 years i have been breeding. I want to offer help to this woman, but i have no idea about this since I have never had the problem (Thank God) Is it hereditary? Is it environmental?
Thank you..
I don’t know what the bumps look like I apologize I am in IL she is in IA.. I have asked for pictures and am waiting on them.. thank you everyone for your answers :)

It’s not uncommon for dogs to have allergies. Defects can be more common in inbreeding and puppy mills. I’ve also seen a case where the dog had an autoimmune disease where his hair fell out and the skin opened up and created infections. With proper care, he lived to be about 8 years, not as old as the typical breed, but close.

explain to me this?

Question by Shelby L: explain to me this?
why is it that everyone says corn is bad in dog food becuase they can’t digest it very well? people can digest corn well and we still eat it. i understand that some dogs have allergies so that isn’t what i’m asking.
wow this question would have made a lot more since had i proof read, i meant people CAN’T digest it very well either

Best answer:

Answer by Vet Tech
Dogs and humans have two VERY different digestive systems.

Not to mention it is not healthy for you to eat something (such as corn) that is not well digested every single day of your life, so why would you allow your dog to?
