Question by Aly: How can you tell if what your dog has is a tumor?
My dog is 10 years old and has always been overweight. Recently, about a week ago, I found a small lump on him under the skin, on his left side just by the spine. We can’t really afford a vet, so if we take him I want to be sure that it is for something serious. Today the lump started bleeding, and so I put some peroxide on it and the bleeding stopped and the skin is closing over it. There was a hard yellow lump in the middle of it when it was bleeding, but it is gone so I wonder if it was the start of a scab. The lump is hard when you rub your hand over it, but when he sits down or lays down to where his back is stretched out, you can hardly feel it anymore. He is older and though his only health problems have been allergies, my friend’s dog Simba had tumors that began to bleed on her legs and she had to be put down. Should we take him to the vet or is this just a growth or fatty tumor that needs not be concerned about? It hasnt grown and it doesn’t cause him any pain. Anyone know what it is?
For those saying I should surrender him to a shelter, if he is sick I am not going to refuse him care. God, have a heart. We’ve had him all 10 years of his life, he lived through years of abuse with me and my brother and if we surrender him he WILL be put down because he has bitten someone before (thank my father). He’s not neglected. Never did I state that we wouldn’t take him to the vet, I said that I didn’t want to take him to the vet for nothing. It’s hard times for everyone, we can’t afford a doctor for our family either.
For everyone else, thank you for the advice. We made an appointment to take him to the vet on Monday.

Question by cody: question regarding medication for animals?
I have a Sheltie dog. Shelties are noted for skin problems. Mine has an Allergy. He gets the same rash in the same places at least 4 to 5 times a year. Every time he gets it, I take him to the Vet, and is charged about $ 100 for him to look at the rash and then give him the pills. Same rash, same pills. I am wondering if there is some way I can get the medication without going to the Vet. They aren’t like people Dr’s, and give refills. If you know of a reliable place to get the medication, Please let me know. Thanks

No. If you have questions ask your vet. Giving your animal meds, not under a vet’s directions could killl your animal

You would be better off to talk to your mom than to go ahead and find the dog a home.

Question by Melita T: How to clean in between my dog’s wrinkles?
My vet is out of town and she wont be back until Monday. She is the only vet around because I live in a small town. I have a 10 month old french bulldog. He isnt very wrinkley but he has 2 wrinkles under each eye. One of his eyes has a rash in the wrinkle and all around the eye, even on top where there is no wrinkle. Its red and bumpy with large scabs that are really hard. I have a lotion that was given to me by my vet for his food allergies…he gets rashes quite often on his tummy. I dont want to use this lotion near his eye because it might leak into the eye and sting!
Recently I switched to salmon pro plan and all his allergies have cleared. Now all of a sudden he has this eye problem…i really dont think its the new food. I think the rash started from the wrinkle. Is there anyone out there with a wrinkley dog who has experience with this? what do you use to clean in between the wrinkles? any lotions that might help because he keeps using his paw to scratch it and its getting worse…

try cleaning it with a soft washcloth and gentle soap (like baby shampoo). keep an eye on him so he really doesn’t scratch it (or if you have a cone collar put it on him).
get to the vet as soon as he’s back in town, probably a skin infection (bacteria, fungus or parasite) and he can treat it. you could use a q-tip to put a little polysporin between his wrinkles.
