Question by Kathy Morrison: Does any know of good brand of dog food for a possible food allergy?
I have an 8 year old Mini Schnauzer. She had what seems to be anal gland problems. She constantly licks back there. The vet believes she may have a food allergy and wants to put her on z/c Hills prescription dog food. I now have her on Wellness Super5Mix Complete Health Whitefish & Sweet Potato Recipe Dry Dog Food and mix in some wet food from wellness so she’ll eat it. At one time she had pimples on her skin so I switched her from Iams to Wellness 3 years ago. The skin problems went away but the anal issue still continued. No my question…. Does any know of good brand of dog food for a possible food allergy. Really don’t want to switch to prescription if I can avoid it and still get the same results.

you need to see a vet to determine if it is an allergy. Even a vet may not be able to determine if it is an allergy but you will at least know for sure what is going on and a proper course of action. You seem to have fixed the food issue, but there may be another problem as well.

Sounds like chigger bites to me. I would go to Walmart or wherever and get one of the products that works for them. I doubt it is an allergy. Most environmental allergies present with a stuffy nose, etc….. Good Luck!!!

Can you suddenly develop a Mosquito Bite Allergy?

Question by Damian: Can you suddenly develop a Mosquito Bite Allergy?
I am allergic to many thing cigarette smoke, Wheat, Yogurt, trees, grass, weeds, mold, and alot more i also have cross reactions and can’t eat any green vegetables or fruit unless it is fruit juice from concentrate and then only one glass, as well as most other vegetables unless they are well cooked and in moderate amounts. I have never had an odd reaction to mosquito bites just the normal itchy bump until 3 years ago. I got to same itchy bump but they grow about as big around as a golf ball though they don’t become raised off the skin any more than normal. The swelling goes down but leaves a red mark that fades to pink after about a week then keeps fading for about two months and leaves a small scar you wouldn’t notice unless you knew where it was and the scar fades completely after about 7 months. Is it possible to develop an allergy after years of not having one. I know it is possible to develop an immunity since i was once allergic to cats and dogs but got over that. It might also help with knowing about my plant allergies i have, since a few years ago when i was outside alot i didn’t have as strong a reaction now i just touch a tree or plant and my hands get red and itchy while as a child i could climb trees and play in grass without a problem.

Question by Jesse: Allergy sufferers, allergists, etc. can I use Zyrtec or anything and have a job taking care of animals?
I used to have an outside dog when I was a kid. I got a soar throat and a runny nose one and a half years after. We had to give it to the Humane Society.

I have seasonal allergies. They make me sneeze and sneeze unless I take my Claritin RediTabs. Back in 1993 I took an allergy test and was allergic to all grasses, the tree of heaven, lambs quarter, alfalfa, feathers, house dust, and dogs.

We used to have two rabbits we kept outside and less than a year later my skin would itch and bleed.

Will Zyrtec or anything work for me and make it possible for me to have a job taking care of animals? If so will I have any symptoms, even minor ones? If you answer let me know what you have used and for how long, are an allergist, physician or whatever.

Best answer:

Answer by J W
I am an LPN, and also an allergy sufferer. Allergic to all trees, all grasses, all weeds, dust mites, mold, cats, and feathers. Zyrtec works very well for me. Although my kitty has passed, it helped me tolerate her presence, as long as I didn’t rub my eyes after petting her. As for environmental allergies, there are time when the non-drowsy type antihistamines just aren’t strong enough. You can use benadryl along with the Claritin or Zyrtec, but preferably only at night since it will increase any sedation side effects.

Question by mommy: My dog has a food allergy that causes yeast infections in her ears…?
well, she has been to the vet so no need for anyone to tell me to take her there. I now feed her purina pro plan for sensitive skin and stomach that’s salmon based. We think she is allergic to any land dwellers because we tried chicken based food, lamb based food, beef based food and duck based food. The stuff she’s on now works great. My question is: could we feed her cat food that is fish based? The reason I am asking is because the stuff she’s on now is a bit expensive for us right now. Obviously she will get what she’s on now regardless. I was just wondering if it would be ok to feed her the cat food.
Thank you guys soooo much for the advice so far. I just thought I would try something that’s good for her and me both but, I guess it wasn’t such a good idea. I’m glad I sought advice first.
What are some good grain free foods?

Best answer:

Answer by Dog Section Regular
NO. Cat food is for CATS, not dogs.

Purina is junk, high priced junk at that.

* They make plenty of allergy foods for dogs. You want a single protein like: fish, duck, rabbit, venison.

Look for a food with NO GRAINS.

Good foods for DOGS:

Wellness
Wellness CORE
Natural Balance
California Natural
Taste of the Wild
Innova
Innova EVO
Merrick
Evanger’s
Blue Wilderness
Canidae
Solid Gold
Orijen
