Question by truely_blonde_2003: Anyone know much about Bichons and hot spots?
My Bichon keeps getting hot spots and scratching. I’ve tried mild shampoos and ointments. Someone suggested steroid injections, but I don’t want to try that route. Some one else said it’s food allergies Any one else have this problem and a solution ?He’s a rescued dog so I don’t know his history, but the way he runs when he sees a can or spray, or tube of ointment indicates he’s had this problem in the past..

Has anyone heard of “Depomedrol?”?

Question by Suni789: Has anyone heard of “Depomedrol?”?
We have had issues with out Springer for years w allergies, we tried every brand of dog food, every topical cream, pill and hollistic med out there and nothing worked. Until a few days ago when our equine vet gave him 40mg of Depomedrol- within 24hrs he has made a complete 180. He had lost all hearing-its back. He had chewed himself raw and bloody-no chewing. He is back to his old self- dancing around his treats, wagging his tale(or lack there of) constantly-hes 11yrs old and has turned into a happy puppy again.
Has anyone heard of this drug? Everyone in my family has at least one dog with serious allergies (all rescues) and we plan to give them all this “wonder drug” but I’m very supprised that more vets don’t recomend it. In 5 years and 6 vets with my allergy-prone BC mix I have never once heard of it- again I’m wondering if anyone has any information about this drug.
Is it the side effects that prevent vets from recomending it? To me it doesn’t sound any more risky then rymadel or many other drugs but I am not a vet nor have any medical training-is it relatively safe to keep a dog on it year round? (twice a year or so)
My BC mix is 7 years old, she is allergic to fleas and has extreme food allergies. She is on flea treatments year round (even in central ny) and taste of the wild, which she does very well on but even with very careful care she still has bad spells in which she chews herself raw and is just plain miserable. I would love for her to be comfortable year round-are the risks greater because of her age? And why is it that no vet mentioned this to me? I feel stupid that all this time I have been searching for something to help these dogs there was a common drug that could turn such a severe case completely around.

I have worked as a vet assistant for 3 years and this is a very common drug. It is an anti-inflammatory. The results usually last about 4-6 weeks, after which time your dog may start showing symptoms again. However, if it’s a seasonal allergy he’s having, the effects of the shot could last longer if it was able to get him “over the hump” and that particular allergen is no longer in his life.

Does anyone own a bichon frise that has skin problems?

Question by Sunday: Does anyone own a bichon frise that has skin problems?
My 7 month bichon recent starting scratching herself around the head and neck and has been biting her legs til the point that they are bald. I have been giving her benadryl as some have suggested and it doesn’t seem to be working much so I have stopped and switched her to a grain free dog food in case it is allergies. Does anyone have suggestions on how to contain this problem? I am looking at taking her to our vet but won’t be able to get in any time soon and looking for a rememdy in the mean time. Bitter lotions, sprays, and other products from the pet stores have not worked.

I have a 5 year old bichon who had skin problems as a puppy. I took him to the vet and i contacted the breeder. They said that bichons can be allergic to certain foods. They suggested taking him off of the food he was eating and switching him to something more natural. I noticed that you have already tried that. That was really the only advice the vet gave me, and that helped him a little. I know you have already tried lotions, but i found one that worked on mine so i thought i might offer the idea to you. The brand is Perfect Coat and its called Nourishing Naturals. Its an Almond Oatmeal spray. I usually rub it into his skin and brush it through.
I hope this helps!

well his vet should know if it is hot spots, mange, or a form of allergy. If he doesn’t have suggestions for you I would try another vet because the poor thing is probably miserable! His vet should have also tried an anti-itch pill temporarily to get this under control!

Question by soleil7372: Does anyone know how to get veterinary help for a chihuahua who needs to go to a dermatologist in Ohio?
I have a little chihuahua I took in several years ago from someone who did not want him. Recently he has developed a skin allergy, causing him to be bald from the neck down, on the inside of his legs, and now patches on his body. My vet cannot figure it out, and we have tried several medications, and taking away possible causes. Now we are told he needs to go to a “dog dermatologist.” After all the expenses we have already incurred, we are now looking at around $ 350 to $ 400, or more. This is really not an expense we are prepared for, as we already spent a bunch on our 3 cats- 1 who was diagnosed with FIV. I was just wondering if anyone knew of any organizations who will help- I have not found any we qualify for. I feel bad for my little guy, but I really need help with the cost. Any ideas would be great- and please be serious. Thanks.
