Question by Jesse: Allergy sufferers, allergists, etc. can I use Zyrtec or anything and have a job taking care of animals?
I used to have an outside dog when I was a kid. I got a soar throat and a runny nose one and a half years after. We had to give it to the Humane Society.

I have seasonal allergies. They make me sneeze and sneeze unless I take my Claritin RediTabs. Back in 1993 I took an allergy test and was allergic to all grasses, the tree of heaven, lambs quarter, alfalfa, feathers, house dust, and dogs.

We used to have two rabbits we kept outside and less than a year later my skin would itch and bleed.

Will Zyrtec or anything work for me and make it possible for me to have a job taking care of animals? If so will I have any symptoms, even minor ones? If you answer let me know what you have used and for how long, are an allergist, physician or whatever.

I am an LPN, and also an allergy sufferer. Allergic to all trees, all grasses, all weeds, dust mites, mold, cats, and feathers. Zyrtec works very well for me. Although my kitty has passed, it helped me tolerate her presence, as long as I didn’t rub my eyes after petting her. As for environmental allergies, there are time when the non-drowsy type antihistamines just aren’t strong enough. You can use benadryl along with the Claritin or Zyrtec, but preferably only at night since it will increase any sedation side effects.

Question by sayswho?: my dog licks his paws SO MUCH he cant walk on them! advice? suggestions? causes? anything?
i have a 6 year old havanese who licks his paws constantly and so deeply that he can’t walk on them for hours afterwards. he does it with such intesity that he pants and his paws are all red.

we’ve taken him to a vet a few times for this but nothing theyve done has really helped. we use all natural cleansers on our floors so i doubt its anything he’s walking on. one vet said it could be food allergies so we’ve switched brands more than a few times but nothings helped. the topical solutions dont do much at all. it’s not a seasonal allergy either.

anyone have any advice or tips? any holistic or home remedies to relieve this itching?

thanks in advance.

Q&A: Will a pit bull attack again? Anything?

Question by candice: Will a pit bull attack again? Anything?
Please be serious. I’ve always heard if a pit bull tastes blood while in anger it needs to be put down b/c it will be vicious. Now about my friends dog Chaos. He is always very well mannered. Can go on a walk without a leash, will stay on the porch without a leash. Has lived with 6 cats and another dog for 2 years, he’s 3 yrs old. On wednesday night he seemed to be playing with the new little puppy (been there about a month) when all the sudden she cried because he had her whole head in his mouth. When made to stop he did. The puppy had $ 200 worth of stitches. The pit also suffers from allergies. Lots of bad patches of skin. WIll he be a dangerous dog now or go back to being a good dog?

There’s no truth to that ‘blood theory’ that you posted.

However, this is not a dog I would trust around other dogs. I would get a behaviorist who has experience with dog aggression in bully breeds involved soon.

Until then, he should never be around another dog off lead. Even with professional help, he may never be reliable with other dogs.

Aggression towards other animals and aggression towards humans is usually unrelated, so I would not be worried about people being around him unless he has shown aggression toward humans in the past. As with any dog, supervise with children.

Question by Cynthia: My Chihuahua is suddenly allergic to anything he eats!?
Three weeks ago I thought my dog got stung by a bee near his eye, because his eyelid swelled up. The next day I noticed a lump on his belly and took him to the vet. They said the lump was inflammatory cells. To ensure infection did not set in, he was placed on antibiotics. Ever since this situation started he has an allergic reaction to everything he eats. Within minutes he his eyelids swell up and then he goes crazy licking his feet. He has been on Benadryl for these three weeks and a couple of small doses of Prednisone. I have tried every standard food allergy elimination process you can find. Yesterday the vet even had him try the super-hypoallergenic food called Science Diet ZD. He actually had one of his most severe reactions from that. He has an appointment with a dermatologist/allergy specialist vet on Monday. Has anyone ever had a situation like this with their pet?

I would try California Natural lamb and rice dog food. It has no fillers and may help with the food allergy. I hope that the dermatolagist can help. Good luck!!

Question by ltoya201988: Is there anything that i should know before I feed this to my dogs?
I have an American Pit Bull Terrier with really bad food allergies and a Morkipoo(Maltese, Yorkie, Poodle mix) who can eat anything. The problem is I’m going back to school in the fall and I won’t be able to afford to feed them the higher end foods that are filler free(I usually feed them either Wellness, Blue Buffalo, or Evo) so I’m considering feeding them a homemade cooked diet(I can’t give them raw food because it gives them diarrhea). I was planning on starting with a chicken and beef vegetable soup with brown rice. The plan is to mix it into the diet that I currently have them on which is Wellness core dry and wet and then gradually increase the amount given until they’re totally eating the homemade food. Is there anything in particular that I should know before I make the switch from commercially made to homemade foods?

If it helps: the APBT is 59lbs and the Morkipoo is about 25lbs
I can’t feed the Pit any kind of food because he has really really bad food allergies. The little one can eat whatever you give him. With the Pit he’s allergic to things like barley. So certain wheats/grains have to be avoided at all costs. I tried searching for the normal foods at a cheaper price but its next to impossible to get wellness, blue buffalo, or evo at a cheap price. I’d rather they stay on commercial foods but with the college expenses I won’t be able to afford forking up 100 dollars a month.
I got the dogs way before I decided to go BACK to college. BACK is the keyword in this whole thing. Again kirkland brand foods cannot be fed to the APBT because of his food allergies. No the soup isn’t premade. Its homemade meaning I’m going to the butcher to purchase the meats and to Stew Leonards to purchased the fresh veges, so no its not loaded with sodium.
Besides if I needed the lecture on why I got my dogs i’d ask for it. All I simply asked for were some tips.

Unless you are giving them ALL their dietary needs you are looking at spending lots more than the cost of dog food for vet care. Make sure you understand all the needs of a diet and that you are meeting these. Good luck :)
