Golden retriever losing hair on his back and tail?

Question by raidergirl1965: Golden retriever losing hair on his back and tail?
We have an 8 year old Golden that has lost hair on his back and tail and gets goopy eyes. We have tried frontline, advantage, and advantix. He has been to 4 different vets over the last 2 years and nothing they prescribe has helped him he has been given eye ointment, eye drops, several different prescriptions nothing seems to work for him. He is a wonderful dog very well behaved and loving. We just feel sorry for him because he always seems to be itchy and biting at himself. We have gotten “bitter tasting spray” to spray on him but when that wears off he is right back at it. He gets an oatmeal bath once a month (we were told bathing him too much will take away the oils in his skin) We give him benidryl but after a few days that doesn’t seem to help him much either. Please any sugestions out there are welcome. We love him and do not want him suffering. We have spent a few thousand dollars trying to help him and would be happy to spend more if it will help him. They just keep telling us he has very bad allergies.
Shelby: he has been to 4 different vets in the last 2 years. We have tried every food that has been recomended to us by vets and pet food stores including all natural and organic foods.
All the vets we have been to have private practice small vets. I would not take my pet to the large chain. He has had injections they lasted maybe a day or 2.

Father of 2: thank you. I’m going to start trying olive oil tomorrow. He has already eaten tonight or I would start now.
Freezin: I’m going to start looking for that shampoo tomorrow thanks.
Jimbs: What do I do with the liserene? feed it to him or put it on his fur?

Can you claim a dog back you gave a way?

Question by Donnor’s Girl: Can you claim a dog back you gave a way?
For about a year and a half I was watching some family’s little kids. They had adopted a little cocker spaniel that followed their car when they left. When they moved next to a highway, they were afraid he would get hit by a car so they said he could live at my house. I took it as though they were giving me the dog. Sometimes the poor pup would go days without food in the winter when they were to lazy to buy food or “just didn’t have the money at the time.” They never got him his shots, but they did pay to get him fixed when they first got him. Now six months later, they say their little girl misses him and they want him back. Just about a week ago I spent $ 150 in vet cost getting him shots and medicine for his eye allergy he gets in the fall. They seem to think they can just come get him without paying me back for the vet bill. Plus, a dog they had a year before was “too hyper for their family” and when I saw it in the middle of January, it was skin and bones. Can this family claim the dog back in any way?

Question by Snoopy: My dog has these sores/scabs on his back, legs and neck. He is a mini schnauzer.?
My dog has dime, quarter and pencil eraser sized spots on his back; we have also found them on his sides and legs.
They puss, scab and the skin falls off.

* I am wondering what they could be and what I could do to help him?

He itches them after they start.
We live in Utah and have been in Texas for 2 months (they started in Texas, right after we got here and have just gotten worse!)
I have multiple fleas on him (there are not fleas in Utah)
I have applied Frontline monthly, we bathe him in flea and tick shampoo.. and have had to cut his hair ridiculously short to try to keep the fleas off of him. (which helps a little).
We have tried:
Bathing, Frontline, Adams plus fleas & tick mist, both on him and the house.
Took him to the vet when it first started (new vet).

I am just not sure were to go from here. We are due to go back to Utah this week and will see the vet when we get there, but until then I just need a little help.

* Could it be flea allergies? If it is can you recommend something to keep them off of him?

* Do I need to worry about taking fleas home with me?
We travel in a travel trailer.

Question by Sherman L: Why does my dog have patches of dark fur and itching on her back?
Our two year old toy poodle mix has always had flea allergies and dry skin. The worst problem is itching on her back, where the fur has turned brown (she is off-white in color) in areas that she tends to chew the most. I don’t think the chewing is the cause of the discoloration because when we keep her back covered with pajamas she doesn’t tend to chew as much but the discoloration and itching remains. The skin does not seem to exhibit any discoloration except for the usual inflammation and irritation from chewing or scratching. Could this be some sort of yeast problem, and if so what can we use to combat it?

Not sure what could be causing this. I would take her to the vet an see if there is something new going on with her.

Question by Lance D: My dog constantly wants me to scratch his lower back near the tail…..what could it be besides a flea allergy
I have tried everything to cure this. I have noticed from time to time some dandruff like flakes back there…but she will rub against a fence until she is bloody trying to scratch…..and she rolls on the grass to scratch…..it seems to be just in that area on her back…..I wonder if it is Exczema or some skin condition….or is it JUST flea allergies…??

That sounds like fleas. My dog had it – if you look close at the spot, and there’s a small mound of what looks like dandruff, that’s a flea nest.
You’ll want to take her to the vet to see if she needs special treatment.
