Three days ago I gave two kittens to a lady…last night she told me she has mild allergies & gives cats baths with Dawn dishwashing liquid to lower dander & kill fleas…I asked her to please not do this, as I have seen pics of cats given baths with products not for cats..such as people shampoo, soaps, dog products…not only does it remove the oils they need, it can kill them…it can act like an acid & literally burn them…it might be fine on one, then kill another…you just don’t know…She says she did it to her two for years & that’s just vets wanting to scare you into buying expensive products…I’m very upset & thinking I made a very wrong decision in giving her the kitties…If anyone has some facts or links I could show her, it would be greatly appreciated…& yes, I would take them back in a heartbeat..
Thankyou for your answers..I just called my vet & she said they do recommend that for fleas for cats too young to use the Advantage…but I know vets have different opinions…so to Liz…please tell me what your vet said…tried to e-mail you, but it won’t let me…
& yes, my cat is spayed…these came from the homeless cats in my neighborhood that I feed..

I was wrong, I guess it’s ok, look at this posting from the purebred cat rescue site… HUMMM,…..
If bathing the cat at home several things will be needed: a large towel, shampoo & conditioner, cotton balls and a hair dryer. A double and deep kitchen sink helps as the cat can put it’s paws on the ledge that separates the two sinks and feels more secure. It is convenient to have a small carrier to dry the cat in. For shampoo in an adult you can use Dawn dishwashing liquid (be careful not to get into the eyes) and baby shampoo or a commercial cat shampoo (tearless) around the eyes. Dawn is a good degreaser. Then you want to follow up with an actual shampoo. In most kittens and cats with fine coats, a shampoo for “fine hair” works well. Many cat shampoos are available, some with color enhancers and others for the particular type of coat. First put cotton balls inside the ears so water doesn’t get down in the ear canal. Then wet the cat down with warm water. Start with the Dawn (diluted down 1 tablespoon to 2 cups of water) and work all over the body being careful to avoid the face.

Dawn is harsh! I hope she doesn’t do that. I’d think people shampoo would be better than that if she didn’t have Cat shampoo!

Question by Sabrina: My dog will not stop scratching and biting. Ive tried bathing him in doggy oatmeal bath and everything.?
I am not sure what else to do. He just started doing it this badly about a couple weeks ago… He has always been very itchy, I just thought it was dandruff or something. But it has got to the point where he was bit and scratched bald spots.

I have not changed his food or dog shampoo or flea treatment so I am honestly lost here and I really am not in a financial place to take him to the vet here… They want 0 for the allergy test. So Please help.

If you’re willing to try then the raw diet often solves the problem. Not always but often.

If I was in your position I would definitely try it. I feed raw anyway because I believe it is far healthier and not because my dogs have allergies, but I have known people change because of the allergy and amazed at the results within a few weeks.

It is worth a try.
