My 4 yr old dobie mix “Rommel” had the skin test done for allergies . He was allergic to many different grasses, trees, dusts, molds, etc. He started Atopica/cyclosporin, alergy shots, anti-histamine and an anti-fungal in early July. He has now lost 3/4 of his coat, developed tremors in the extremities and papillomas (warts/pimples) all over. The dermatologist prescribed a second round of tapered steroids…no improvement.

Since he is not improving and the side effects of cyclosporin are obvious I was considering going the holistic route….which would be to stop everything and start from scratch. I just started him on a strictly raw meat (Drawins) diet. Has anyone delt with this diagnosis before? taken the holistic route? Being in the medical field myself(w/ humans), I fully understand the immunological response…but Rommel is looking like an end-stage cancer patient.

I have dealt with it many times! the steroids themselves do not help if the dog is still in contact with the allergens. You need to have actual Allergen shots made specifically for him that cover the what he is allergic too. This will run you about 200.00, but when you factor in all you have spent already it is worth it.

Each occurrence would stay a while and then go away. Now the vet thinks it could be a food allergy. In the beginning we were not always washing his paws. We thought heck he is a water dog. The problem still occurs.Has anyone had this problem?

when I saw ice or snow, I thought about salt used to melt the snow. That could be the cause if you live in a cold climate, or the allergies as the vet sais. Has he treated him for the allergies?

my dog been itching and eating grass and throwing up He has skin allergies do you think its because i switch hes food in march to natural choice lamb and rice its not like its helping him.hes allergys usally only act up in the fall but its spring. and ive been giving him baths and every thing do you think its a good idea to put him back on pedigree

HAVE HIM CHECKED FOR WORMS IF HE’S DOIN IT EVERY DAY GET TO A VET
DOGS NORMALLY EAT GRASS TO UPCHUCK BUT IN SOME CASES SUCH AS INTESTINAL WORMS HE WILL DO IT MORE

I have tested him for Cushings disease and allergies, but it all comes back negative. His hair is balding in a very large patch on both sides of the same area of the body which leads me to think it is definitely hormonal. If it is allergies, the skin is silky smooth, but I have taken him off of all beef and chicken. He scratches his body all the time and scratches his rear end on the concrete all the time.

Have you checked his anal glands? That is usually the cause of the butt dragging. Has your vet checked a full thyroid panel? How about checking adrenal glands? Liver function and kidney functions can also point you in the right direction. With this ongoing for a year, unless there have been a million other tests and treatments, find a new vet! Have you seen a dermatologist? That would be my suggestion at this point.

I have went to 4 different vets in 2 weeks, and so far no one can explain why my dog has almost lost her life to a severe allergic reaction that almost closed her breathing passages. My dog has had blood in her urine, and her tummy is red and hot. I have done everything humanly possible and avoided any trigger for allergies, my floor and anything in her reach is spotless & chemical/dye free. She is on antibiotics but she is still passing blood, her blood test have came up normal . My mom thinks it was the tainted dog food, but is on a mild home-made diet from the vet but only a little better, also her kidneys tested normal. Her hemoglobin (red blood cells) were up. She cleared up with prednisone but they won’t leave her on it, and I’m afriad she’ll go into another attack. Please remember before leaving comments, I have taken her to many vets. Thank you all.

It sounds like she may have multiple sensitivities.
Did any of the vets talk to you about food mites?
My mother-in-law made her dogs there food and microwaved it to kill mites. I thought it was crazy at first but it helped her dogs feel better. Unfortunately, I don’t have the information she gave me on it.

Try to give your dog fish oil pills. They are anti-inflammatory as well as beneficial many other ways. Give the diet a while to work. It sounds like the dog has been very ill.
