Q&A: kitty food! best quality,?

Question by the bleach blond asian: kitty food! best quality,?
my cats live outdoors and they are having skin conditions lately…like flakey skin and patches where the fur is sparse if any.
what ingredients should / shouldn’t there be?
btw – any common allergies among cats? like corn in dogs..

edit** my kitties are healthy, get lot of fresh water and food.. but i feed them meow mix for kitties because they like it the best.
we do not have a local pet store and don’t travel out of town much, so Tractor Supply Company(TSC?), Super walmart, hugos/county market…they’re about the only places that sell cat/dog food. Yeah. Small town.\
is it bad? i’m sorry… =(
i really have no clue about this stuff. News to me!

Question by pokey4021: what is best treatment for skin allergy, excessive licking and sometimes smelly ears in springer spaniel dog?
My Vet has prescibed predisone 25 mg for 52 lb. dog. To be taken periodically for what we think is an allergy. Vet said to give dog break from meds, then resume in a month or so. It takes about 6 weeks for the dog to develop symtoms again. Tresaderm is prescribed for the ears. I also use a preventitive ear Flush.
He eats Maximum Nutrition Lamb and Rice for adult dogs, 2 to 3 cups a day. He is somewhat lethargic now, could be due to the time of year – winter – which means we don’t go out on as long of a walk as in summer. But the licking has caused his hair to be brown on paws. I am told this is due to an ensyme in the saliva. He is white and liver and tan normally. When he is allowed to run free outdoors he will eat duck, horse and chicken droppings and eggs from our free range poultry. He will go after and eat toads, squirrels and anything he finds. Now it is winter, so those “treats” are not available to him. So tell me; Is he lacking something in his diet? Thanks!

Question by Bordeaux: Should I insist on feeding EVO or was this for the best?
My dog has allergies, but it is not clear whether it is only environmental or if he has some food allergies as well. The vet says that since I only had him for around 3 months there is not enough information to determine that yet (he comes from a shelter with no known history). He is around 15 months old, good weight, great energy level and good appetite.

About a month ago I switched him from Wellness Whitefish and sweet potato to California Natural lamb and rice due to a rather serious bout of vomiting after eating the Wellness for 2 weeks. He’s doing great on the CN, but I have this nagging anxiety about the low protein content (around 21%) although I love the ingredient list. I was supplementing it with canned food (same brand, same formula) to add some protein and fat but I am still a little worried about his nutrition.

Today I went to the feed store to get more food and I ended up picking up a bag of EVO red meat too. I figured I would transition him very very slowly, using the EVO as treats for the first few days and then blending it in gradually. After all, I heard wonderful things about EVO and we really don’t know if the dog is food allergic or not… However, once we got home, the dog simply would not eat the kibble I offered as a treat. He smelled it, licked it, picked it up in his mouth and spit it out! I tried several times and managed to get him to eat 2 pieces, but that’s all. Thankfully, I can return the bag even though it’s open, but I am looking for advice before I do so.

Do you think I should insist on feeding the EVO or this is for the best? I can still get my money back and get him something else or just stick to the CN dry plus canned… What do you think?

Question by ?? ? ??’s ???? ?s ????????: What’s the best way to help clear a dog’s skin [from allergies]?
I have a lab/shepherd mix and her skin is all messed up like she’s allergic to something. It didn’t start until she was about 9 months old when I switched dog food brands but I have since switched back and she started to get better but now she’s a mess again. I use Purina Dog Chow now. I figured she was allergic to this certain brand [Dad's] so I also switched the cat food [same brand-Dad's] since she likes to get into their food as well. I’m starting to think she’s allergic to fleas because she wasn’t this bad in the winter. I apply Frontline on her monthly but it doesn’t seem to be working [she still gets some fleas].

Does any one have any advice to offer? What relief can I give her if it’s a flea allergy and fleas meds aren’t working?

Answer by IAreChuckNorris
You really can’t do anything till you figure out what she’s allergic to, I’d suggest going to a vet.
