Question by MOGua: My Bichon Frise has allergies causing him to itch himself constantly. His skin has red spots, he bites himself
My dog, a Bichon Frise has pinkish red blotches on his skin. His supposedly white fur has become pinkish where he licks, and scratches himself. He is almost always performing the acts of licking, scratching and biting himself. After doing some research, it seems as though that this allergy is called “atopy.” Having this allergy prevents him from enjoying the great outdoors and having fun because he has to stop from playing and itch himself. Please help. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for all the help.
We have taken our dog to multiple vets and he has done the blood test. One of the vets recommended him to take Atopica, but after taking it, he threw up severely. We are scared to give him more Atopica. Do you know if it actually works? Or is throwing up actually normal after taking Atopica. Thank you.

Question by Sandy K: I have a 16 year old female Pomeranian named Pumpkin who bites herself and has sores on her body.?
When I take her for a walk or even when she’s home, she spends most of the time scratching herself and rolling on her back and spinning on her rear end.
Pumpkin also barks a lot now and I know she’s in distress but every time I took her to the vet, all he did was give her a shot of prednisone and antibiotics. That had only given her temporary relief. The vet felt she had an allergy and had termed her skin condition as “moist eczema”. I then heard that prednisone is a steroid and too dangerous for dogs so I stopped that.
I wash her with SulfOxyDex. I don’t think it’s fleas or anal glands because I take her to a groomer who said she does not have fleas. I also tried applying benadryl gel with not much success. Pumpkin also has her teeth cleaned once a month.
Now she spends most of her day in the closet or under the bed . The only peace she gets is when she’s sleeping. Do you have any suggestions on how to treat Pumpkin?
I appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.

You need to take her back to the vet and tell him that the medicine only worked for a while,nd you have hear so much about prednisone, I think you will find its better to let her finish the whole percription also take to your vet about changing her diet because it might to strong for her now and she might need a adult food. You must find some relief for her she is in pain along with the itching. I had a Jack Russel that did tr he same way and I got her on a better food and she now is great, no scratching or crying. She might not have fleas but she could be allergic to fleas and if one got one her and jumped off. That is what was wrong with my little dog and after I changed her food and she finished her medicine, she was fine.Good luck!!!!!!

Question by Supersitter: Help please? My Bachon Frise bites at her paws and we don’t know how to stop it?
She has a dog cone on now, because she will bite and lick at the tops of her front two paws until they bleed and swell up. We asked the vet, and he said that she probably has allergies, so we bought her some hypo-allergenic food and dog treats, as well as some topical medication to put on her paws and sensitive skin dog shampoo. We have been doing this for the past six weeks and have seen no improvement. Has anyone else had this issue? If so, how did you solve the problem? We have tried covering them with bandages but she always ripped them off. Thanks in advance!

It may be grass seeds stuck between her fingers!

Question by Kendo: My dog bites his nails?
My Staffy does this. Is this normal?
I’ve owned other breed dogs before and never known this.
I’ve always had to trim their nails, but this Staffy keeps his own nails trimmed by chewing & biting them.
He is 2 years old, well treated, happy & confident, gets a good 1-hour run (off-leash) in the woods every day, has plenty of toys in the house & garden, gets lots of attention.
He also occasionally does the ‘roll over’ and wriggles on his back, when he’s laying on the rug. It looks very cute.
But… could it be a sign of allergies? (he’s not got any fleas or mites)
I’ve tried him on 3 different food brands (He’s on Arden Grange for the past 3 or 4 weeks) and it doesn’t seem to make much difference.
Or is this ‘biting his nails’ just something that some dogs do?

He may have a nail infection or a parasite that is bugging him…take him to your local vet.
