Question by Hana: My dog is always biting and itching but doesnt have fleas!?! please help!?
my dog is a 10 month shih tzu and he recently went into a vet check up and they gave us some medication for him and he started to do better. but after he stopped taking it he started to itch alot. the doctor said it was allergies to food, or outside allergies. he currently eats benefit for pups and we bathe him every 2 weeks. when i tried looking for the fleas or ticks, all i find are little black critters but no eggs. he recently got worst since i look him outside to use the bathroom and i think a bug bite him? because he started to run out of the grass and itch himself.

i also heard that it that it could be dried skin? if so what shampoo should i change to? im currently using hartz ultraguard and top paw bright and brilliant whitening conditioner.

im thinking about changing his dog food, shampoo and getting flea treatment just in case but looking for other opinions!

take to vet for tests
could be allergies
could be bathing to much, 6-8 weeks is plenty for dogs

My dog won’t stop biting hard around his crotch!?

Question by totravel01: My dog won’t stop biting hard around his crotch!?
I noticed my dog has been itching and scratching himself more and more since late last week (it was mainly just behind his ears and shoulders) – I gave him a bath on Thursday thinking it was just that time. On Friday, I noticed he was licking and biting really hard on his inner hind legs and crotch area. He has bitten so hard on his inner leg that he has broke a little bit of skin and I have noticed some small pink bumps (or bites?) all around his crotch. I have stripped all of the sheets, pillows, blankets and cleaned everything in the house really good. I gave him another bath tonight (Sunday) just in case for whatever reason we hadn’t gotten the soap all off the first time. He is still biting and chewing and I don’t know what to do! I am sure he is miserable and want to help him but not sure what to do! He gets his flea medicine every month like clockwork and is an inside dog. He is supposed to be on a no-wheat diet for potential allergies (though he does sneak a treat in here and there). He has never had any issues like this since we adopted him 2 years ago! He has more “allergy” type issues with his ears and anal glands filling up. It is October and the allergy season is pretty much over (although, it has been warmer than normal here) any ideas? I’m hoping it’s just an allergy issue and nothing else!! Could it be a spider bite? We have noticed a lot more spiders running around outside! I don’t want to take him to the vet if I don’t have to as it gets to be so expensive and I feel like I get brushed off as I tend to worry about the littlest things (he is my baby, and I want the best for him!) If it makes a difference in breads, he is a basset hound.

he could be getting bitten from the spiders, or other bugs outside. i would treat the house with bug bombs, too. also, dont let him sleep near the walls, doors, or windows, and bugs could crawl in and directly bite him. if it helps you, you could get him some light colored bedding if you dont already have it, so you can see if its something he is getting attacked by when he sleeps. also, if you have carpet, you should put down some flea and tick powder, just in case he did get a flea and you didnt see it. the flea and tick powder will kill any flea and ticks and their eggs thats in the carpet. if all else fails, he may have a skin condition. dogs can get those like humans, and may require some special lotion or medicine to supress it.

She maybe allergic to something she’s eaten or has got bit by something, but take her to another vet, to get another opinion.

Question by ROCKER_CHICK: Why are our dogs biting their hair off the base of their tails?
My dogs, a year old golden retriever/lab mix, and a 4 year old lhasa apso, and they both are biting at the base of their tails. My Lhasa has very sensitive skin and had many allergy problems in the past, so I wasn’t as worried, until the other dog got it. The neighbor’s dog also has it, and after our uncle’s dog came over, she got it on her tail too! The neighbor’s think it is something in the grass.

Is it possible that the apartment complex is putting something in the grass that is making all the dogs have this problem?
Not fleas. They have had flea prevention the entire time, searched and searched, absolutely no fleas. Tried a few oatmeal baths for them. It seems to help but only for a short period of time. We do it about once a week. The vet said to use hydrocortisone and Neosporin, to help save us money. It just seems a bit unrealistic to smother them with ointment twice a day when there is quite a bit of redness.

why is my husky biting?

Question by kelly d: why is my husky biting?
my husky is 15 months old and is biting the fur on the tip of his tail and front legs, he is not biting his skin just the fur but this is causing his fur on his front legs to go a red/orange colour. his bridge on his nose also is a bit pink and is has been scratching that too. i brought some cream for skin problem in dogs and have used that on his nose which has stopped him scratching but is still very pink. when i took him to the vets they said first it could be the tip of his tailing about to drop off!! (on the very tip it looks black, but that could just be the colour of the skin), then that he might have fleas – which i said i have already checked and he doesn’t also i use frontline drops every 2 months, which they came out with then it might be mites or even an Allergy. They told me to change his food from the brand he has been on since he was born (eukanuba) to a brand called wafcol and to cut out his treats and to replace them with carrots. I have done this and still no change apart from he loves his carrots now!! As you can imagine i am really confused to what the problem could be. He is fine in himself, eating playing sleeping, everything a dog should do he does but worse! lol!
yes i am changing my vets!!
i try not to bath him to much but if i have to i use baby shampoo, i dont really like dog shampoo dont trust it (dont ask lol!) he is brushed at leasted once a week, no dont smoke, house is very clean – run round cleaning up after him, esp muddy prints everywhere lol!, yes i do use airfresher, maybe that could be it as i do like a clean fresh home, and i have wooden floors, his bed gets cleaned once a week.

It could be a couple of things, it could be seasonal meaning he could be allergic to the outdoor environment, or it could be food related. I suggest switching to a “grain – free” dog food… I use “Orijen” when my dog had similar symptoms and it helped him tremendously. And for treats, carrots are great, I also suggest fruits like apples, oranges, bananas, but stay away from things like grapes, plums, and kiwi….
Also, how is its exercise schedule? depending on the size of the dog, there should be at least 1-2 hours of daily exercise… and no, tossing a ball through the house is not exercise.
