Question by tripperpup: My chihuahua keeps full body shaking (like they do after a bath) and I’m not sure why? 20-30 times per day?
Hi – my dog seems to have picked up a habit that drives me nuts. He full-body shakes (not shivering, but like how dogs shake after they get a bath) constantly – and I mean constantly. Today alone he shook 22 times. This has been going on for around 6 months now. I took him to the vet and he said it is probably dry skin, but he did not seem to take me seriously when I said how excessive it had become.

I give him regular baths with moisturizing, natural shampoo and he gets defurminated often. He eats Wellness small bites food and has no allergies that I know of. Could he have an ear infection? The only thing is that I never actually see him itch his ear or anything, and he never just shakes his head. It is always his WHOLE body.

The worst it has been was 38 times in one day. I am worried about how this could affect him (seriously, his brain must rattle around or something..)

Please help!
Thanks for the information so far. How often should a dog receive a bath? He gets one every few weeks now, but I live in NYC so he starts to stink if I do it any less (lots of walks and stuff). Also since he is so low to the ground I am constantly having to wipe dirt off his belly. Would it be better to use some sort of moisturizer? I also hear he could be deficient in some vitamin that is causing his skin to become dry…

Would a dog develop an allergy as he ages? He only picked up this habit in the past half year, and he is six.

He just wears a normal collar which has never bothered him before.

Thanks again for all the responses.

If you are giving him lots of baths his skin might not like that. Or he could have eaten something that has made him shake.

Question by Amber: What is our french bulldog allergic to? Red bumps all over his body that wont go away? switched food & bedding?
Our dog is only about 8 months old. He got welts over a month ago 2 days after we got back from the beach. His face swelled horribly. We bathed him in sensitive, mild dish soap and gave him benadryl. Hasn’t had any reactions as bad, but the bumps continue to reappear and then go away. No clue whats causing this. Switched his food to Wellness-allergy food, and bought him a new bed. Vet gave him a shot & said to continue w/ benadryl til we figured out what was causing it. He didn’t seem to have a clue either. Any help would be appreciated!

Sand fleas, perhaps? Many dogs are extremely sensitive to flea bites, even having allergic reactions… Could be some other kind of bug, but you should bathe the dog, inspect for fleas, and if the problem doesn’t subside you may need to have the veterinarian do a scraping to determine whether it’s pyoderma, folliculitis or some other infection.

Good luck : )

Question by elmonterose: How long does it take for a dog to eliminate foods he has eaten from his body?
I think my dog has allergies and I am in the process of testing different foods to eliminate the ones that could be causing his allergies. How long does it take for his body to rid itself of the food he may have eaten this morning, lets say. So I can try a new food? Please only answer if you know it to be true…(meaning you have been witness to it) Thank You!
Thanks all, and Anna Marie, when you wrote signs are: boogy eyes, runny nose, & itching…did you mean signs of Pollen allergy or food allergy? Cause she has all those signs. The foods I am trying are homemade ie. chicken, beef, lamb etc.

Question by Tinkrbug: My dog has skin lesions all over his body and ears. What should I do?
My 4 year old dachshund has red, scabby lesions all over his stomach, back, and in his external ear that have been coming and going over the past few months. The lesions are red and scabby on his stomach and ear, but appear as dry spots on his back and head. The vet said he was experiencing allergies, and gave us antibiotics and a special oatmeal shampoo to use. The lesions seemed to be reducing, but never completely go away and get worse every couple of weeks. We can tell he is in discomfort, but have no idea what else to do to help him. The carpets were shampooed recently, which we suspect is the culprit of starting this whole situation. However, after researching on the internet and talking to our vet, we are not convinced that this is the entire reason for his reaction. He is not receiving any new food or medications other than the antibiotics. We feed him Science Diet Small Bites and he uses a water fountain that is cleaned fairly regularly. He also takes Interceptor each month for heartworm prevention. I clean his ears regularly to help the lesions in his ears, but what can I do to help get rid of the rest of the reaction? We are hoping to re-shampoo the carpets, and are considering either cleaning them without the shampoo to get rid of any residue, or using an organic pet-safe shampoo. Any suggestions? Please help since it is heartbreaking to watch him in such discomfort. Thank you!

Question by Sandy K: I have a 16 year old female Pomeranian named Pumpkin who bites herself and has sores on her body.?
When I take her for a walk or even when she’s home, she spends most of the time scratching herself and rolling on her back and spinning on her rear end.

Pumpkin also barks a lot now and I know she’s in distress but every time I took her to the vet, all he did was give her a shot of prednisone and antibiotics. That had only given her temporary relief. The vet felt she had an allergy and had termed her skin condition as “moist eczema”. I then heard that prednisone is a steroid and too dangerous for dogs so I stopped that.

I wash her with SulfOxyDex. I don’t think it’s fleas or anal glands because I take her to a groomer who said she does not have fleas. I also tried applying benadryl gel with not much success. Pumpkin also has her teeth cleaned once a month.

Now she spends most of her day in the closet or under the bed . The only peace she gets is when she’s sleeping. Do you have any suggestions on how to treat Pumpkin?
I appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.

You need to take her back to the vet and tell him that the medicine only worked for a while,nd you have hear so much about prednisone, I think you will find its better to let her finish the whole percription also take to your vet about changing her diet because it might to strong for her now and she might need a adult food. You must find some relief for her she is in pain along with the itching. I had a Jack Russel that did tr he same way and I got her on a better food and she now is great, no scratching or crying. She might not have fleas but she could be allergic to fleas and if one got one her and jumped off. That is what was wrong with my little dog and after I changed her food and she finished her medicine, she was fine.Good luck!!!!!!
