My dog (Male Boxer) keeps breaking out in whelps?

Question by Eslie C: My dog (Male Boxer) keeps breaking out in whelps?
He has whelps (raised areas on his skin) that come and go. This Past Monday I had to take him to the vet. He said it was an allergy. He gave him an antihistimine and it went away, today it is coming back???
I haven’t been able to come up with anything that could be causing it?? Any suggestions?

Could be many things. My schnauzers sometimes break out in whelps after they are groomed.
Do you have carpet? Did you put carpet cleaner on it?
Does your dog stay outside? Any pesticides used lately?
Could be a lot of things, but you surely need to find out what and prevent it from happening over and over to your dog.
You can give your dog some benedryl when it get’s the whelps, they should go down quickly.

Question by Koter Boters misses Rufus!: How can I get my brother’s boxer to get more meat on him?
My brother’s Boxer is very skinny! Yesterday when I fed him I saw him turn and when he turned all I saw were ribs. He looked like he was just skin and bones but when he isn’t turned he doesn’t but he is still skinny.

Should he eat a better food or just eat more food?

My brother feeds him once a day but when I get there to feed him in the morning the dogs are both hungry. So I am thinking they need to be fed twice a day!

Rufus the boxer eats generic store brand food if that helps any. Both Rufus and Merle don’t have allergies or anything so I don’t see a prob;em with the food its just that Rufus to me needs to eat more.
Thanks! I have a bag of canidae my dog’s don’t eat so I will take some over to my brother’s house and see if they like it. I will feed them twice.
My brother’s other dog is ideal size and he is a Blue Heeler!
I do feed them wet food but its junk like the dry food! I don’t think my brother knows much about dog food thats why he buys what he buys at Kroger.

I will bring a measuring cup with me to see how much they eat. My brother doesn’t use one he just uses a sauce pan.
Thanks I will try and make the satin balls sometime when I have more money! My dogs might even like them!

If a store brand is all you can afford I suggest Kirklands brand sold at costco its alot better than purina or iams and it doesn’t contain corn

also a vet check should be done to be sure he doesn’t have worms or another un seen problem

also twice a day would be better. check the bag for how much to feed.

Question by New Mexico08: What treatments have worked for Boxer Dog (skin) Allergies?
My boxer dog started getting hemangiomas and histiocytomas (growths on the skin due to allergies) when he was three. His skin condition has gotten worse since then -he’s now nearly 5. I feed him a no-grain food (Orijin), give him extra fish oil each day, and bathe him once a week with Oatmeal shampoo. (all recommendations from my vet). He stopped itching when he was given prednisone and Tameril P -but after a while on steroids, my laid back pooch started getting more easily agitated (aggressive) around other dogs -so we took him off of that. Now he’s developed folliculitis on top of everything else. I just want to find relief for my dog. Does anyone have experience in this area or have some advice? Thanks!

Atopica is another treatment the vet can prescribe for your situation, but the prednisone and temeril p is the first treatment because because of price and depending on the weight, Atopica is about $ 200 per month in the beginning and dosages less often in the following weeks, plus the prednisone and temeril p shouldn’t be given for extended period of times anyway because it leads to Addison’s Disease

Tritop should help with the folliculitis, about $ 20.00 per tube, but you may also want to ask him about a different shampoo, if you are able to do weekly baths, you might consider:

or

something that can address the issue at the skin level also.

i have a boxer that has allergies as well but he never gets sores.. i would suggest you to get an allergy test done at the vet to actually see what he’s allergic too. after that your vet should know what kind of medication would be best…. because my dog is on some kind of medication and he doesn’t bit at himself anymore..
