Question by the fire within: Should the English Bulldog standard be changed?
I’m not against the bulldog, just think the standard should be changed so breeders don’t continously breed for smushed faces, flab, and huge heads.
Problems:
1) It’s extremely dangerous to allow standard bulldog bitches to naturally whelp because unlike nearly all other breeds, bulldogs have tremendous heads which require C-sections. The pup’s head gets stuck in the birth canal, trapping other pups inside Mom.
2) Full of health problems. Skin problems, food allergies–what else? These are side effects of the smushed nose and wrinkles.
3) Does not seem to have a purpose. I know we shouldn’t decide whether dogs should LIVE or not just whether or not they help us, but the bulldog does not really get or do anything through existence–they sit, sleep, and eat. They don’t protect, they can’t run/swim cuz of their massive heads, and they can’t move as freely as other dogs cuz their heads weigh them down, literally.
So, should the breed standard be changed or not?

I would like to see that changed! Did you see the show Nature on PBS recently, it was a 2 part show about “Dogs that changed the world” and they addressed the issue of the bulldog’s changed image. It was a great show and will probably be on again this month if you missed it!

Question by King the American Bulldog: American Bulldog wont stop itching?
Okay my American Bulldog “King” which I absolutely love more than anything in the world has allergies. He is white with a black/brown patch on his eyes. When I took him to the vet the doctor immediately said that he is probably allergic to his food, She gave him some sort of cortisone shot and we switched him from Blue Buffalo which he seemed to love over to (Royal Canin Hypoallergenic HP 19 Veterinary a hypoallergenic dog food made by Royal Canin which I personally dont think he cares for, However he completely stopped itching. ) Its been about six months and it hes back at it again scratching and his body is red all over. I don’t want to keep racking up these extraordinary vet bills but I want him to be comfortable and stop itching. Can anyone that has experienced this problem help me please?
Thank You

Is your dog getting anything other than its meals? Are you giving him any kind of treats? It wouldn’t necessarily have to be very much to upset him if it is something he is allergic to.
My dog also has allergies, his cause intestinal upset, and it only takes a very small something to upset him. Sometimes he finds a piece of food that someone dropped outside and gobbles it before I can stop him, and next thing i know he has tummy problems. Could this happen to your dog? just thought I’d share that with you.

Question by Amber: What is our french bulldog allergic to? Red bumps all over his body that wont go away? switched food & bedding?
Our dog is only about 8 months old. He got welts over a month ago 2 days after we got back from the beach. His face swelled horribly. We bathed him in sensitive, mild dish soap and gave him benadryl. Hasn’t had any reactions as bad, but the bumps continue to reappear and then go away. No clue whats causing this. Switched his food to Wellness-allergy food, and bought him a new bed. Vet gave him a shot & said to continue w/ benadryl til we figured out what was causing it. He didn’t seem to have a clue either. Any help would be appreciated!

Sand fleas, perhaps? Many dogs are extremely sensitive to flea bites, even having allergic reactions… Could be some other kind of bug, but you should bathe the dog, inspect for fleas, and if the problem doesn’t subside you may need to have the veterinarian do a scraping to determine whether it’s pyoderma, folliculitis or some other infection.
Good luck : )

Question by Missymae: bulldog with green eye gunk…and a chihuahua that is vomiting froathy stuff?
Before any of you say anything, I have done nothing but care for my dogs like my children. I am watching my grandmas english bulldog who is 5 years old. We knew she had allergies, and have been treating her for them as needed. but here the last few days, her eyes have been green and goopy more so then normal, she just wants to keep them closed, and her eyes are getting cloudy. My grandma is in the hospital/rehabilitative service because of a knee replacement. She has her credit cards frozen until she gets out, because other family members have abused them in the past. She has no problem taking this dog to the vet, but i do not have access to her cards until next week. I have been wiping her eyes with a warm rag every morning. What could it be? could the dry eye be getting worse?
My next question is for my 2 yr old chihuahua. He hasn’t been the same today. He has thrown up a ton! mostly through the night while we were sleeping. The pile that i am assuming was first, was burgundy/dark brownish,,, but his dog food was a dark brown yesterday, with corn and stuff in it. So was this pile of vomit. I found several other piles of white frothy vomit all over. he also had about 4 piles of poop. ( he does’nt poop in the house). This was all over night. I have taken his food away and water, offering it to him in small amounts. he wont go to it, but if i take it to him he will drink. i have pulled his skin he isn’t dehydrated. he is UTD on all his shots. What other things can i do for him Financially I can not afford to take them both to the vet, my husband was laid off the first of the year,
I would put it on my credit card, but i am maxed out due to another dog incident, where my english bulldog was vicsioulsy attacked by a german shep, required 72 ICU and a ton of procedures. Help me with some ideas please until i can be on my feet again,
no, it isnt cherry eye. She has allergies, and dry eye (both common in bullies). on of our other bulldogs (this is the mama dog that is sick) has had the cherry eye repair, mamas is dry eye..and possible eye infection?

Question by Mary K: Help! Skin allergy in bulldog puppy ! What to feed until I can get to the vet?
I have a 9 week old english bulldog.
I have been feeding him the food the breeder gave me(Pride) until this week I started to gradually add a little of the food I bought IAMs puppy smart . Today is the first day I only gave him IAMS. His skin is red on his neck belly, feet, well in other words where ever he has white fur I can see his skin is a red.
I do not have any more of the pride dog food the vet gave me. There is no stores open that have pride dog food, no vets, at this time of night. Iam boiling chicken for him to eat will this be alright for him until I can take him to the vet? What can I feed him?
well I have a little girl in bed cannot go to the store and buy long grain rice, would minute rice be ok? I have minute rice.

Dogs can be allergic to several types of food, but the most common triggers are chicken, beef, corn, or wheat–all typical ingredients in commercial dog food. The allergy usually shows up as a skin problem, such as itching, rashes, and hot spots (warm spots of infected skin). Some dogs may have stomach upset as well, with chronic diarrhea or vomiting.
