Q&A: Flea meds for feral cats?

Question by nt: Flea meds for feral cats?
I take care of feral cats. In the winter, I let them stay in.

Last year, I got infested with fleas. Took lots of bombs to get rid of them.

So, Ive been buying generic frontline for large dogs then using a syringe to put the correct dosage on the cats. The man from the spay/neuter clinic suggested it, says he does it for his cats and that there is no danger whatsoever in using on cats. Dosage is the key.

Been doing it for about 3 months now.

A couple of things…

First of all, my feral don’t exactly “relax” and let me apply it exactly to the skin. I end up doing the best I can but often that’s just rubbing it in their hair as best I can.

Finally, the package seems to suggest you can go 3 months between applications unless your pet has flea allergy dermatitis.

Finally, it says do not reapply for 30 days.

Any comments on practical applications would be appreciated.

Ive been applying it monthly but clearly, every 3 months would be cheaper.

What about the challenge Im having applying it to their skin ? Am I wasting it just rubbing into their fur ?

Thanks.

My main concern is keeping my house from getting infested like last time.

PS I paid $ 17.99 for a pack of Pet Armor Plus for large dogs which comes out to 24.5 ml dosages. 72.33 cents per dose.

Clearly, I can save a lot of money if I can get by only applying it every 3 months.

What about using a lower dosage every month ?

Appreciate any tips & tricks.

Im stocked up for the winter. Plenty of food, litter & flea meds.

Right now, only 1-2 come in for 8-10 hours a day. In the cold of winter, I might have 6-7 of them inside.
I compared the ingredients, its the same.

And yes, most of them WERE ferals. Now they are somewhat tamed but they were feral.

My latest guy….about 3 weeks ago, the first time I ever saw him, he was about 25 yards away. I simply waved. A friendly wave. He tore out like I was attacking him.

Then little by little, I lured him into the garage with food. And then into the house.

Now, he has slept inside about 5 nights so far. Other cats don’t really like him and he has tried to mount at least 2 of my 3 fixed females.

The only ones that aren’t true ferals are the 2 babies of the mama.(the other 2 died for unknown reasons) They were born inside. But I am the only human they know. And they sure don’t walk up to strangers like the house cat across the street. (Well, he stays inside about 8-10 hours a night in good weather)
The fact that mine stay outside more than yours suggests they might need more frequent dosing.

I know that you can use Advantage for dogs on cats but with a completely different dose. Both have the exact same ingredients. I wouldn’t trust Frontline and the Pet Armor Plus to do the same unless you have a list of ingredients for both and find out what the “plus ” means. I apply the Advantage to my cats about 3 times a year as they are indoor cats, but I think that that would also work for your ferals.
To apply, make sure that these are put on the back of the head near the neck. The cats can’t lick it there. Just quickly press in to the skin and squeeze it out. That is the best that you can do.If it does just get on the fur in that area and is rubbed it, I’m sure that it will work. Contain it to the back of the head to prevent poisoning from licking.
Oh, and if these cats will actually come into your house on their own, they are not exactly feral, lol. A true feral wouldn’t even let you get within 10 ft. I caught one in a cage 2 years ago. She lives in my house, won’t have anything to do with me but loves the other 3 cats. To catch her for flea meds or clipping nails is not fun and I suffer the damages. lol.

Allergy or Anti-Itch medication for cats?

Question by Jackie: Allergy or Anti-Itch medication for cats?
This is not an emergency – and if I wasn’t dealing with a Spynx (hairless cat), I probably wouldn’t have even noticed it, the lack of hair on my cat lets me see everything on his skin.

My cat has two bumps (swollen – irritated areas) on the top of his head. I’m thinking they are bug bites or something else is causing irritation. I have given him a shower with oatmeal shampoo, taken his temperature (which was normal) – he is eating, drinking, being playful, and using the bathroom fine – I’m not noticing any swollen lymph nodes or anything showing me he is sick.

Anyways, I’m wondering if any stores (like PetSmart, PetCo – these are the only two by my house), sell any sort of itch relief cream for cats – I’ve seen him itch it once which could be contributing to the swollen areas. My regular vet doesn’t open back up until Monday, and since he seems to be perfectly fine except for the bumps I do not want to take him to the emergency vet for this. If anyone knows of any relief/remedies for him please let me know! One of my cats got a high temperature from being stung by a scorpion and they just gave her a benedryll shot, I know of other people who give their dogs benedryll when they get stung by insects (I live in AZ, lots of scorpion/bee bites in the summer), but I’m not sure if this is safe or not. I don’t even know if this is an insect bite, but it seems to be itchy for him.

If the bumps aren’t looking better by tomorrow I’m going to call in to get an appointment for him for Monday, but it doesn’t seem necessary at this moment, I just want to help relieve the itching for him to see if it can get the swelling down. Thanks for any help!

Question by KRISTIN: Was my daughter allergic to the cats, dog, or neither?
My daughter is 4 and yesterday we went to a house with 2 cats (they were just tthose short haired cats you see all over the place but I have no clue what they’re called) and a Boston Terrier. She was all about the animals the whole time, and for an hour or two after we got there, she was sneezing with a running nose that seemed to itch a little. When the cats wanted to escappe her constant playing and petting (nice to them so don’t worry), they went upstairs for a break, and that’s about the time she stopped sneezing. The dog was still there.

She’s lived with 2 chihuahuas her whole life, and never showed any signs of allergies from them. They aren’t ours, though, and when we move out in September, I wanted to get us a cat and probabably a Boston Terrier (seriously LOVE that dog, lol), but I don’t know if she’s allergic to them or maybe neither. The boston terrier, Max, has much more dander than I ever noticed on the chihuahuas, and I am allergic to all animals (I’d be getting shots but would never do that to my kid just to get a certain animal). The chihuahuas would occassionaly give me a little trouble, but nothing too bad. The boston terrier gave me hives all over my arms, cause I carried him around outisde alot. So it is possible the dog did it to her, but I’m pretty sure it was the cats, or maybe neither. She’s gotten some minor allergies this spring and maybe it could’ve just been a coincedance. How do I know for sure? How can I test it? I would never subject her to allergy shots just so we could have a cat, and I would never get an animal with the chance I’d have to give it back. I neeed to know for sure if she’s allergic or not. How can I check it? We don’t know maany people with cats, and not any where she could sppend the night or two, andd I don’t know any catss who I could borrow for a couple days, lol.

She’s barely been around cats at all, and never a boston terrier before, so I have no experiences to compare to yesterday. And I don’t know if he had more dander than the chihuahuas because that breed just has more, or he isn’t groomed enough. I coould see his dry skin, though, and it seemed llike a lot, so I do have a feeling it is partially his grooming.

Oh, and the chihuahus are one short haired and one long haired, and they’re always all over her, so she’s had a LOT of coontact with them for thhe past few years, and again, she’s NEVER had ANY sort of allergy symptoms which they had caused-I’m positive of that.

How do I know if she’s allergic to cats (and/or possibly the bsoton terrier), and is it true that with proper grooming, the boston terrier wouldn’t cause me such horrible allergies?

Thanks in advance for any advice you could give.

How do I keep stray cats out of yard and off cushions?

Question by Nancy P: How do I keep stray cats out of yard and off cushions?
My parents neighbors have many cats and my mom found out from her neighbor that her son feels bad for strays and leaves food out for them every night. Her son is 30 years old and whenever his mother says something to him about doing that, it turns into a big fight. My problem is my father and my son are highly allergic to cats and the cats lay all over their outdoor furniture cushions. As soon as my son sits on any furniture he starts with the itchy watery eyes. We do give him allergy medicine the whole time we are there but he once wound up in ICU for a week from being around a cat and I fear that will happen again. We were over her house yesterday and this morning my son couldn’t open his eyes due to allergies. She has 2 dogs but they don’t stay outside without her, these cats lay on the furniture all night and when she’s not home. We have to do something that is not harmful to her dogs or to children. Any suggestions?

Cats are notoriously impossible to keep out of anything, let alone something as open as a backyard. A large chain link fence might work, but they’re expensive & may not be possible if your parents are renting or have to deal w/a home owner’s association. So you’ve got 2 options-get rid of the cats or get rid of the fabric cushions which trap the cat hair.

-Call animal control. I love animals, but haiving a huge population of stray cats hanging out in your backyard is a BAD idea. This is how diseases spread. Plus I’m guessing these cats aren’t neutered/spayed, so it won’t be long for their population begins to increase even more. Animal control can catch some of the animals & give them the care/vaccinations they need & possibly find homes for some of them. Some of them may already have homes, but may be reported missing due to the fact that they now reside in your parent’s neighbor’s backyard (cat’s will generally go where the food & company is best & it sounds like there’s a feline mardi-gra feast going on there). I’m sure her son think’s he’s helping the cats, but in the long run, he’s not.

- Get rid of the cushions & get plastic outdoor furniture
-Some stores sell covers for outdoor fabric cushions or the entire piece of furntiture-invest in that (try Lowes or wherever you would find furniture similar to what you own).

Basically, you have to cover up the fabric or vaccum it every day. Plastic is much easier to wash off & the cats probably won’t be as attracted to it.

Good luck!

My parents yard is fenced in, they have a resort-like backyard with a built in pool and about 30 different kinds of seating so bringing cushions in each night is really a hassle, if it’s a choice between being inconvenieced each night or the health of the family, of course I would opt to bring the cushions in, but why should we be inconvenienced this way when they own the home and choose not to have cats for pets. About animal control, I don’t know exactly what they will do for us, but what good is it when the guy next door just keeps leaving food out for them. Another bunch of cats will be hanging around soon anyway. They will be back again. What does animal control do about this guy next door. They aren’t neutered and there has been several kitten litters under my mothers shed. Some look like they are sick and something is wrong with their eyes. I am just disgusted with this whole thing. Besides these cats, everything else about the house and the neighborhood my parents love.
The two dogs are my mom’s. Sorry, I didn’t make that clear in my question.

Keep the cushions in the house. Also, the neighbors should not let those cats go on their neighbor’s lawn when they are allergic!! That is very wrong!! Tell the neighbors that if they let the cats in your parent’s lawn, then you’re calling the police. Simple as that. Then, straight away, they will get the cats off the lawn. And that 30 year old son has to learn that he should not let their stuff go onto other people’s property. GOoD LuCk!
