Question by Andrew T: Is it ok to keep a boxer puppy on science diet or change to a different food?
I Just adopted a boxer puppy from the shelter and while there they fed her science diet. I read on other sites that science diet is not a good food for “all dogs” like they say. I was looking towards a more natural food but still stay in a budget. The reason why i’m thinking about changing b/c boxers a prone to allergies with grains. Any boxer owners on here that could help please. But is it really a big deal since she’s been on it her whole life pretty much?

You can always change the food. Science Diet is what most shelters are sponsored by, so once you adopt, they want you to continue to feed that food. That will NOT keep you on a budget! It’s over-priced CRAP.
Good foods:
Innova
Innova EVO
Wellness
Wellness CORE
Canidae
Solid Gold
California Natural
Natural Balance
Taste of the Wild
Merrick
Instinct
Orijen

You should change it gradually, but everything went OK, so I don’t think you have anything to worry about. Consider yourself lucky.

Question by chezza: My German Shepherd dog has a skin allergy. Would a change of diet help?
My beautiful GSD has been itching and scratching herself raw on her belly and hind legs. She has lost a lot of fur and the skin underneath is red. We have seen the vet but he was no help, he said it was an infection and the heat has made it worse. We give her Revolution for flea control, she’s had 2 courses of antibiotics, steroid injections, and medicated dog shampoo baths, but nothing has really helped. She may be allergic to something, and I want to change her diet, but don’t know what is best to feed her. I don’t have the time to home cook meals for her. We are in Australia. Any ideas???

Yesterday my girlfriend noticed that our dog (15 months, 25-pound mutt) was twitching, particularly in his ears but throughout his whole body, too. He seemed otherwise healthy—active, affectionate, generally happy and normal, but he was shaking. The twitching got better, but we’re not sure what the cause was.
Could it have been the new dog food we started to integrate into his diet the day before? It seems like a good brand, and he went nuts for it, but my girlfriend thinks maybe he’s allergic to something in it. What might cause a dog to twitch like that? Could it be something serious?
