Q&A: How to cure an itchy dog?

Question by steve24639: How to cure an itchy dog?
About 6 weeks ago my dog developed some kind of skin problem. He has built up skin flakes all over him, especially around his ears. He scratches constantly. The first time we took him to the vet the vet said that it was a flea allergy causing it. He gave him some kind of tablet to take monthly and put him on antibiotics. This helped at first but what healed up came back and worsened. I took him to the same vet a couple of weeks later. The second time he said that the fleas were gone, but said that he had mites and that might be what’s causing it. So he prescribed a tube of liquid that goes between his shoulder blades that would kill the mites, and more antibiotics. Today marks 2 weeks after the second visit, and he is in the same shape. I’m going to take him to a different vet, but also wanted to get some advice on what his problem might be on here. He is a pitbull/greyhound mix and is about 11 years old. Since developing the skin condition he has lost weight, from about 70 pounds down to the mid 60’s.

I would try a different Vet. He could have allergies.

Q&A: How do I cure Separation Anxiety in my dog?

Question by Justin K: How do I cure Separation Anxiety in my dog?
I have a one year old Jack Russel. I recently acquired her, and have been training her, because my roommate could not find time to do it. I have successfully housebroken her, but the biggest problem I am having is that if I leave her alone in the car, or the house, she will bark and whine. Even if I am only gone for a few minutes. She also scratches, constantly. She doesn’t have fleas or skin allergies, its more out of nervous habit than anything. I think its part of her anxiety. I have to be able to leave her alone while I go to work without making a lot of noise. I work nights and the barking keeps my roommates up. Please do not suggest short term fixes like toys, I would like to be able to fix this permanently.
I do not leave my dog alone in the car for longer than the time it takes me to run into the gas station to pay for my gas, in the few moments it takes me to do that, she starts barking and whining.

first of all, don’t leave your dog alone in a car.

second, call a behaviorist. no one on this board knows your particular dog, and there is no ‘quick fix’ that is permanent. it takes a lot of work, and an animal behaviorist can help you.

stephanie… a bratty puppy and genuine separation anxiety are two different things.

how to cure itchy skin on a dog?

Question by waterlilyccr: how to cure itchy skin on a dog?
I have a long haired Chihuahua. I have tried bathing her in t-gel and I have tried witch hazel. Nothing seems to work. She is always scratching and biting. Any ideas? Not a food allergy. Already know that. Tried changing all that up before and making her dinners of plain chicken or rice or oatmeal. Loves all that but still itches like crazy. Its not fleas she’s been dipped and wears a flea collar and I search her for fleas often as well as ticks because we live in the country. Any suggestions that won’t harm her would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Seasonal allergies perhaps? Some OTC allergy meds, like Benadryl, are safe for dogs. Maybe that could ease her symptoms.

Question by Erika *mom to one fabulous pom*: is there a cure for dog eye boogers? I already feed top of the line food and give filtered water?
Im not sure what to do to fix it. It isn’t a big problem, vet says it is most likely allergies, but it is with both of my dogs. I have a 5 lb pom and an 80 lb chesapeake bay retriever. they aren’t green or anything, they just get heavy every once in a while. I feed them both Evo as well as Nature’s Variety RAW dog food. Their water runs through a filter. My chessie takes omegas and fish oils, but to no avail. They never itch or rub their faces and their eyes aren’t pink or irritated at all, just boogery in the mornings…. Advice/tips?

You already do more than enough. If that does not work nothing will. It is probably airborne allergies.
