Question by Tracy B: My 1 yr old cat has developed itchy flaky spots. too much licking & spot gets infec/already took antibiotic?
Problem persists. I have limited experience with dogs and cats and realize this may be an allergy thing. Cat eating a different cat food for 5 days…no change in lesions. Cat will begin eating another untried food (Nutro brand). This poor former stray is a sweetie with personality and did not become a compulsive licker (pretty much all over his body in a bit of a random way) until about 3 mo. ago. I put ‘Revolution’ for cats on him Jan. 8, 2007. This is good stuff that kills fleas, prevents eggs from hatching and also goes a long way toward killing ear mites. I tried the Rev. because I first suspected flea-bite dermatitis. I have treated with cortisone cream, aloe, colloidal silver, antibiotic ointment and Panalog Ointment (prescrip. from vet that contains nystatin-neomycin sulfate-thiostrepton-triamcinolone acetonide usp). Punky (my cat) is also now wearing lovely home-made “pajamas” to hinder him from licking his worst spot….THE VET SAID ABSOLUTELY NO MORE LICKING

There is a spray called “bitter apple” or “bitter cherry”. They are non-toxic and may help your cat stop licking. Get it at the pet store.

My 5 year old dog, a female shitz shu, started scratching and her skin turned red and felt hot the touch. We took her to several vets, all of who felt it was an allergy, but no one could figure out what she was allergic to. We changed bedding, food, shampooed carpets. We gave her tablets to prevent fleas, although I have never seen one on her. We also changed the shampoo to a pet shampoo with oatmeal and alovera in it. We give her,on our vets advice, 12.5 mg every 4 hrs, of Benadry. The vet has given her several steriod shots which had no effect at all. We do not have the money to keep taking her to the vet. She’s a beautiful little dog who has been a great companion to my husband who is recovering from a stroke.Does anyone have any idea what may be going on. Thank you, and our dog thanks you.

My 2 year old female German Shepherd has recently developed spots on her back between her hips of hair loss. It appears as though the undercoat is there and there is a light top coat that remains. We have taken her to the vet and have ruled out food allergies. The spots are not bilateral but rather sporadic spots that vary in shape and size. She bites and grooms as usual and we have her on flea and tick treatments. There has also been mild hair loss on the back of her legs near her rump. It does not cause her discomfort and the spots are not red or irritated. Before taking her to a dermatologist I was hope to get some feedback. Does anyone know what this could be? Any in home treatments? Ever had an experience like this before?
