Question by Hana: My dog is always biting and itching but doesnt have fleas!?! please help!?
my dog is a 10 month shih tzu and he recently went into a vet check up and they gave us some medication for him and he started to do better. but after he stopped taking it he started to itch alot. the doctor said it was allergies to food, or outside allergies. he currently eats benefit for pups and we bathe him every 2 weeks. when i tried looking for the fleas or ticks, all i find are little black critters but no eggs. he recently got worst since i look him outside to use the bathroom and i think a bug bite him? because he started to run out of the grass and itch himself.

i also heard that it that it could be dried skin? if so what shampoo should i change to? im currently using hartz ultraguard and top paw bright and brilliant whitening conditioner.

im thinking about changing his dog food, shampoo and getting flea treatment just in case but looking for other opinions!

take to vet for tests
could be allergies
could be bathing to much, 6-8 weeks is plenty for dogs

Question by Not what you want to hear: My dog is having issues with one of her ears. It doesn’t appear to be mites or a yeast infection. Any ideas?
One of my dog’s ears has redness, slight discharge, and a bunch of dry and flaky skin on the inside (there’s no overwhelming smell; just an unpleasant dog ear smell). She was scratching it a lot earlier in the day, so I helped alleviate the itchiness by peeling off the dead skin. She stopped scratching it luckily, but there’s still redness and a bit of discharge. I’ve looked up symptoms of ear mites, yeast infections, and allergies and it doesn’t appear to be any of those… She eats Blue Buffalo food and has no other dry patches of skin besides in her one ear, so I don’t think it’s allergies; there’s no evidence of blood so that rules out mites. Will it be okay in a couple days if I just use a dog ear-cleaning solution? Thanks for any help!

Yeah, I was going to say it sounds a lot like a fungal (sometimes the fungus is a yeast) or even a bacterial infection to me, but I’m not a vet. Try the ear cleaning for a couple days and if it doesn’t get better, take your dog to the vet. She might need a medicated ointment or solution for her ears.

Question by Vivian L: I want a puppy but my mom won’t let me! My dad doesn’t care, but i can’t get one if my mom doesnt approve.
I am 12 and I found this dog online in a pound nearby. My family, me, my older brother, my mom and my dad, all are allergic to the hair, but the allergies aren’t bad. Sometimes we don’t even get an allergic reaction. The worst things that have happened to us are itchy skin and light hives. My 13 yr old brother and I each own betta fish by ourselves. We are very responsible and get good grades (a’s, b’s) and we almost never get in trouble. Also, i’m asian, i can’t really clean my room, because its already clean. I have plants that i take care of and water everyday and i play the piano. When i ask my mom if i can get a dog, she says its too much trouble because most of my relatives live in L.A (I live in sacramento), and we visit them atleast once a year. We also travel to other states and countries once a year for fun. I could keep the dog in the backyard + my aunt has dogs, so when i travel, i can leave it there.
(We don’t do many chores, but i still don’t think it’d work) vet costs to
Here’s some info on the dog i want to get:

Kahlua’s info…
Breed: Chihuahua / Terrier (Unknown Type, Medium) Mix
Print Pet
Info
E-mail Pet
to Friend
Size: Small 25 lbs (11 kg) or less
Color: Brown/Chocolate – With Tan
Sex: Male

Age: Young
Kahlua is:
already neutered

up to date with shots
Kahlua’s story…
Kahlua is about 2 years old and weighs about 13 lbs. He gets along great with other dogs. I spent some time with this little guy and found him to be quite friendly. He’ll wag his tail in greeting and enjoys taking walks with you. He enjoys petting and is not timid. Thank you for your interest.

My advice is get a hypoallergenic dog ( dogs that cause less allergies then other dogs). The reason they cause less allergies is becuase of their special hair. Unlike other dogs that have fur that they shed all the time, these dogs have hair more like ours that barely sheds. People with allergies are usually allergic to the dander of the dog, and if a dog sheds less then you will contact the dander less.

These are hypoallergenic dogs

Afghan Hound

Barbet

Bichon Frisé

Bolognese

Greyhound

Havanese

Maltese

Poodle

Portuguese Water Dog

Schnauzer

Shih-Tzu

Silky terrier

Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier

Welsh Terrier

West Highland White Terrier (westies)

Yorkshire.

And maybe you can get a small dog which you have travel with easily and take with your on your trips ?

As for convincing your mom I can’t help you much here. I’m in the same situation and my mom still wont budge, even after I do excelent in school and do plenty of chores.

Question by M H: How long does it take to see improvement after you start the medication. She doesn’t want to eat or drink.?
Took to vet yesterday because she has lost her appetite and doesn’t want to drink much water either. She is a maltese shitzu mix and weighs 9 1/2 pounds and is 2 years old. He told me he thought she had a urinary infection because she was in heat a few weeks ago and that she also might have some type of seasonal allergy because she is chewing and scratching herself. She also wants to sleep a lot, although I can get her to eat if I put a small amount of white chicken in her dog food, but she won’t eat the dog food. She is playing still some but not as much as she usually does. He put her on the Baytril and gave her a cortisone shot. How long should it take before I see any improvement? I am really concerned, so anyone who can tell me anything will be helpful. Thanks.

Question by spike_1920: My dog is shedding more than normal and the vet doesnt know whats wrong?
I have a 1 and a half year old Chihuahua/Beagle mix. We got her from the pound around November of 09 and she was fine. we got her fixed and she is up to date on all her shots. Here recently with the change of the season she started to shed, which is expected. about a month ago however, she started to shed excessively.

we took her to the vet and the vet said that it was allergies, he prescribed medicine and said if it doesn’t get better to come back. well it got worse and so we took her back, he did a skin scraping to check for mites and mange. both test came back negative. the vet said that he didn’t know what it was and recommended i go to a dog dermatologist. i checked on prices and the specialists is really expensive and i may not be able to take her. we’ve changed my dogs food from pedigree to natural choice, venison and rice, because i thought that it may be a food allergy. well she’s been on the new food for 2 weeks and i haven’t seen any improvement at all. we don’t feed her any treats, table scraps or anything, just strictly the food.

I live in an apartment, with no other pets and am a clean person. my dog gets a bath once every two or three weeks. because the vet said that if i give her a bath more often than that it would hurt her coat.

im basically looking for any advice on what to do. her stomach/chest area is almost bald and even if i could take my dog to the dermatologist the closest appointment isn’t until the middle of may. If anybody has any ideas/comments please feel free to voice them.
it would be a miracle if she is pregnant as we got her fixed the week we got her. i dont think we got the virgin mother mary of dogs lol.
